Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra stands out as a full redesign that brings a fresh look inside and out, along with a strong emphasis on technology, efficiency, and safety. It is presented as a compact car that feels more substantial than its price might suggest, with styling, ergonomics, and tech that help it rise above the usual small-car expectations.
What makes it especially appealing is the way it combines everyday practicality with a more upscale feel. The available owner feedback lines up with that impression, pointing to comfort, fuel efficiency, and value for money as major strengths, along with comfortable seating and advanced technology. A noted drawback is acceleration power, so buyers looking for a more energetic driving experience may find it less convincing than its other qualities suggest.

I just lost my Hyundai 2017 in a crash. It was my second Elantra and I drove them both for 8 years. I did routine maintenance but never had any repair bills . They are great cars and that is why I am looking to buy another one.

I recently bought the Limited trim from CarHub in Stafford, VA. The features are great, it drives smoothly, I feel safe in this car, and the value was great as Im able to pay it off without destroying my wallet. I genuinely feel like this car matches up to a Corolla and a Civic, so I highly recommend it!

The 2017 model has some nice upgrades compared with the previous generation. Different front appearance. It also has a better gas mileage and a more sophisticated entertainment system. I would have loved to see also heated seats and a sun-roof which is only available in certain sport versions. But all in all I am very happy about this car and consider it a good value.

| Year-Round Low | $9,349 |
| Year-Round High | $10,143 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,031 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.09% |

There are 1,669 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.7/5 user rating and an 8.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
Owner feedback consistently points to comfort, fuel efficiency, and value for money, with comfortable seating and advanced technology standing out as recurring strengths. That lines up with the overview: you’re looking at a compact car that feels more substantial than its price suggests, especially if you want everyday practicality with a more upscale feel.
There are 28.9% good or great deals in the market, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights comfort, fuel efficiency, value for money, and a generally dependable ownership experience, with many drivers saying it feels like a strong alternative to pricier competitors. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Elantra is built around value, safety, and technology, which supports the case for a car you can count on day to day.
The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is making sure the specific car has been cared for well, especially given the mixed accident history in the market.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?
At 45.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows uneven wear. Focus on condition first: bodywork, alignment, tire wear, and how the electronics and safety features operate in real-world use. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example is usually worth paying a little more for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE trim includes power windows and locks, a 6-speaker stereo with AM/FM/XM radio and a CD player, and USB/auxiliary audio inputs. The Limited adds Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity with voice control, keyless entry, push-button start, and steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, so it’s the better-equipped choice if you want a more polished daily driver.
- Powertrain: The Elantra uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with drive modes for Normal, Sport, and Eco. Fuel economy is rated at 29 mpg city and 38 highway, while the Limited returns 28 mpg city and 37 highway.
- Safety package: Available safety tech includes electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, tire pressure monitoring, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection. Some of the more advanced features are not standard on every trim.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes USB/auxiliary audio inputs and SiriusXM satellite radio. Higher trims add navigation with turn-by-turn instructions in the gauge-cluster display, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available through the touchscreen.
- Fuel efficiency: The Elantra is rated at 29 mpg city, 38 highway, and 33 combined, while the Limited is rated at 28 mpg city and 37 highway. The SE with the manual drops to 26/36.
Which 2017 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 2 trim levels: SE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Elantra experience with power windows and locks, a 6-speaker stereo, and USB/auxiliary inputs. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and can live without the nicer convenience features.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want the Elantra to feel more complete, since it adds Bluetooth with voice control, keyless entry, push-button start, and steering-wheel-mounted controls. It also pairs well with the available tech and safety packages if you want a more upscale small car.
The safety package is strongest on the Limited, where the available Ultimate Package adds headlights that bend with the road, smart cruise control, lane-departure warning, and collision avoidance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,669 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.09% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 45.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,349, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $9,421 sits slightly below last year's $10,031.
That softer pricing suggests the Elantra has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you shop carefully now, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later because the market has already moved down from where it was a year ago. Strong value positioning can also help keep demand steady among budget-minded used-car shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra safe?
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is expected to earn an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a five-star crash-test rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai’s safety suite includes electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 45.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.09% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 brings a full redesign with strong technology, efficiency, and safety.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $8,301, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,421 average.
- It offers roomy, efficient, simple, and safe transportation.
The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded Elantra with the redesign’s stronger tech and safety appeal, the 2017 is the smarter pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 can still make sense as a value-focused alternative.
