CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Honda HR-V

Summary
With 974 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,426, 35.6% of 2017 Honda HR-V listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Honda HR-V 4.4 / 5 stars.
54.6% of 2017 Honda HR-V listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Honda HR-V stands out as a practical subcompact crossover that blends SUV-style versatility with the easygoing footprint of a small car. It was part of the first-generation US HR-V, which used a 1.8-liter four-cylinder powertrain with 141 hp and a CVT automatic transmission designed more for fuel economy than performance. That setup helped make the HR-V appealing to buyers who wanted efficiency, everyday usability, and a higher driving position without moving up to a larger SUV.
What made the 2017 model especially distinctive was its Magic Seat system, which allowed the rear seats to fold in multiple ways for different seating and cargo needs. It also offered 58.8 cubic feet of cargo space, a strong figure for the class. The HR-V’s trim range gave shoppers some flexibility too, with available features such as automatic climate control, lane-departure warning, leather-trimmed seats, and different audio systems depending on trim. Owners also tended to value its smooth driving feel and overall value for money.
There were some drawbacks to keep in mind, though. Early HR-Vs were criticized for a clunky infotainment system, and some owners reported CVT-related problems, especially when accelerating hard. The 2017 model also lacked the updated infotainment and safety improvements that arrived later, so it is best suited to buyers who prioritize practicality, reliability reputation, and space over strong acceleration or the latest tech.

This could be a great value but this model has transmission issues and I was told it wouldn’t be covered because of the salvage title.

I love my Honda and it is a great value. My car is only missing air/heat vents in the back on the vehicle.

I love this car and ended up buying it because of it being such a smooth vehicle to drive with touch screen controls, heated seats, and a sunroof. Over all just a nice, clean, little SUV!

There is no extra storage space. Given the fact that it is the smallest of the SUV lineup for Honda but top of the line in the package, I guess I expected more.

Generally — the 4.4/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners commonly praise its smooth driving experience, value for money, and useful features like the touch screen controls, heated seats, and sunroof. The HR-V’s practical subcompact crossover layout also makes it appealing if you want everyday usability, a higher driving position, and cargo flexibility in a city-friendly package. With 31.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Honda HR-V reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback highlights a reliable reputation, but it also mentions transmission concerns, so you should pay close attention to how the CVT behaves on a test drive. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is ending up with a vehicle that has been driven hard or poorly maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda HR-V?
At 55% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and how the transmission feels during acceleration and low-speed driving. If anything seems inconsistent, keep shopping.

What is the 2017 Honda HR-V's resale value?
The current average of $14,437 sits slightly below last year's $14,633.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stays steady. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in good condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell. Demand should remain supported by the HR-V’s practical layout and broad appeal to value-focused shoppers.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.34% compared with last year.

Consider the 2016 if:

- It emphasizes smooth driving, spaciousness, and strong reliability.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $15,786, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,437 average.
- It adds higher ground clearance and a more premium cabin.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the best all-around pick if you want a balanced mix of price, owner satisfaction, and practical utility. If your priority is saving money, the 2016 is the better value path; if you want a newer-feeling cabin and can spend more, the 2018 is worth a look.
