Summary
With 80 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,997, 40.0% of 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback 4.56 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback stands out as a practical, fun-to-drive compact car with extra cargo space and sport-oriented tweaks. It was also the first Civic Hatchback Honda sold in the U.S. since 2005, which gives it a special place in the Civic lineup. The car’s appeal is straightforward: it builds on the Civic’s broad popularity while adding the versatility of a hatchback body style.
That combination makes the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback especially attractive to buyers who want usefulness without giving up driving enjoyment. The expert test drive data describes it as “more of a good thing,” and notes that it offers even more to love than the already well-regarded Civic. Owner feedback generally reinforces that impression, with praise for its performance, reliability, spacious interior, smooth driving experience, and stylish design.
There are a few drawbacks worth keeping in mind. Some owners have reported concerns about the air conditioning system and paint quality, including flaking paint, and a lack of certain features such as GPS. Even so, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback remains appealing for shoppers who value a roomy, versatile compact car with a sporty character.

I love the features in the car. It's exactly what my daughter wanted. It's a little too low to the ground.

I am obsessed with this car. Best car I have ever had. I previously had the LX, but it got totalled, and I bought the same exact car but it is the EX. Heated seats, sunroof, push start. I really, really love it.

The features on this car is something else. The car has a blind spot camera on the right mirror. Hondas are a really reliable car. We’ve had a Honda until it had 300k+ miles on it and had no problems. Only thing I wish it had was a GPS but it’s not a huge negative. I was looking at either the Mazda3 hatchback or the civic hatchback and ultimately went with the civic just with the sleek design of the vehicle. Super smooth in its driving and would definitely recommend going Honda!

Is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback earns a 4.56/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Form and function, Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its performance, reliability, spacious interior, smooth driving experience, and stylish design. That lines up with the overview: you get a practical compact car with extra cargo space and a sporty character, so it works well if you want usefulness without giving up driving enjoyment. The market also shows healthy interest, with 32.0% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.56/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliability, and it also highlights the car as a model people feel good about living with over time. The expert write-up reinforces that dependability angle by describing the Civic as a car with a long history of reliability, and the cost-effectiveness discussion ties that to strong resale value. The ownership risk for used buyers is less about the car’s basic appeal and more about making sure the specific example you choose has been cared for properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback?
At 48.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows signs of uneven wear. Focus on body condition, paint quality, and any signs of prior repair work, since owner feedback mentions paint concerns and the overview points to some reported issues that are worth checking carefully. If you’re shopping a higher-mileage example, make sure the cabin electronics, climate system, and overall maintenance history look clean.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The hatchback’s styling is shared across the lineup, but the Sport Touring stands out because it adds Honda Sensing, while the EX-L Navi gets that package as an extra-cost option. The base setup also misses some of the more advanced convenience and safety content, so you should compare equipment closely before assuming every trim feels the same.
- Powertrain: The hatchback uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. LX, EX, and EX-L Navi trims are rated at 174 hp, while Sport and Sport Touring trims rise to 180 hp with a center-outlet exhaust. A 6-speed manual is standard on LX and Sport, while the CVT is optional on LX and Sport and required on EX, EX-L Navi, and Sport Touring.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing includes collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, and active cruise control that can follow traffic at low speeds. It is standard on Sport Touring and available on EX-L Navi for an extra $1,000. LaneWatch is another available safety aid that uses a camera to show your blind spot on the dashboard screen.
- Infotainment: You can get a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and EX-L Navi and Sport Touring add navigation. If you choose the manual transmission, you lose the better tech setup and get a simpler radio arrangement instead.
- Fuel efficiency: The available content does not state MPG or MPGe figures.
Which 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback trim should I buy?
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, EX-L Navi, and Sport Touring.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the simplest way into the hatchback, and it makes the most sense if you want the Civic’s core practicality, the 1.5-liter turbo engine, and the standard 6-speed manual. It’s the trim to consider if you care more about value and driving feel than extra equipment.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the more powerful 180-hp tune and keeps the manual transmission standard. If you want the hatchback’s sporty personality without moving too far up the price ladder, this is the one to focus on.
- EX: This trim shifts you toward convenience, but it also requires the CVT. It suits you if you want a more relaxed daily driver and are willing to give up the manual.
- EX-L Navi: This is the trim to choose if you want navigation and more upscale content, and it can be a smart step up if you’re already planning to add Honda Sensing. It’s the better pick for buyers who want a more fully equipped hatchback without going all the way to the top.
- Sport Touring: This is the most complete version, with Honda Sensing standard and the strongest mix of equipment. If you want the most safety content and the fullest feature set, this is the trim to buy.
Honda Sensing is standard on the Sport Touring and available on the EX-L Navi for an extra $1,000.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback?

- Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 619 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.58% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 48.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,673, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback's resale value?
The current average of $16,078 sits slightly below last year's $16,675.
That tells you the market has softened, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also mean slower appreciation if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that this model still has broad appeal, but you should expect resale to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment. Well-kept examples with the right trim and clean history should hold up better than average because shoppers still value the hatchback’s practicality and sporty character.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback safe?
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback earns five-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, and active cruise control that works at low speeds. It is standard on the Sport Touring and available on the EX-L Navi for an extra $1,000, so you should check trim carefully if safety tech matters to you. LaneWatch is another useful available feature, especially if you drive in dense city traffic.
Should I buy a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 48.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.58% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert write-up highlights the hatchback as the first Civic Hatchback Honda sold in the U.S. since 2005, with extra cargo space and sport-oriented tweaks.
The bottom line: If you want a used Civic Hatchback with strong practicality, good owner satisfaction, and a market that currently favors careful shoppers, the 2017 is a solid choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping for the cleanest, best-maintained example you can find and use the softer pricing to your advantage.
