CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Genesis G80
overall

Summary
With 253 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,798.00, 27.3% of 2017 Genesis G80s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Genesis G80 4.93 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
53.8% of 2017 Genesis G80 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Genesis G80 stands out as a rakishly rendered luxury automobile that brings a fresh upscale identity to the midsize luxury sedan class. It is presented as a new Genesis-branded model for this year, and the overall impression is that it has the ingredients to compete with other midsize luxury sedans. That said, the interior execution is not quite as convincing as the exterior design, so its appeal is not purely about style.
What makes the 2017 Genesis G80 especially attractive is the sense of value and luxury it delivers. Owners are described as very pleased with their purchase, often praising its excellent value, impressive technology, and luxurious feel compared with more expensive brands like BMW and Audi. At the same time, some drivers note drawbacks such as uncomfortable seats for long drives and the absence of certain conveniences like a power trunk button or heated steering wheel, which keeps the car from feeling fully complete in every respect.

Beautiful vehicle, comfortable ride, and plenty of power. JD Power compares this to BMW, Audi, Cadillac, and Mercedes. Definitely a good value for what you get and holds its own with the legacy luxury brands.

How much does the 2017 Genesis G80 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,941 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,813.35 |
| Year-Round High | $16,328.67 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,333 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.40% |
Prices have softened 2.40% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 262 listings available, which suggests a workable amount of inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $14,813.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Genesis G80 a good car?
Yes — the 4.93/5 user rating points to very strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8.00/10. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its excellent value, impressive technology, and luxurious feel compared with more expensive brands like BMW and Audi. The overview also frames it as a midsize luxury sedan with a fresh upscale identity, while noting that the interior execution is not quite as convincing as the exterior design.
That mix makes it especially appealing if you want a luxury sedan that feels well equipped and premium without chasing the highest-priced badge. With 24.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Genesis G80 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.93/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with buyers especially appreciating its value, comfort, and technology over time. The expert notes also support that impression by describing the car as engineered to meet the requirements of a comprehensive warranty program and by saying it should satisfy owners from efficiency and reliability standpoints.
Genesis also includes free scheduled maintenance with valet service for the first three years of ownership, which helps reduce early ownership hassle. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a luxury sedan with a lot of equipment can become more expensive to keep feeling fresh if prior maintenance was skipped.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Genesis G80?
At 54.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or electronic repairs. Focus on condition details that matter in a luxury sedan: seat comfort, infotainment behavior, and whether the driver-assistance systems operate cleanly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base G80 3.8 comes with a 3.8-liter V6, rear-wheel drive or AWD, and a lower starting price, while the G80 5.0 adds the V8 and a more powerful, better-equipped feel. The base trim is the one to scrutinize most closely for feature gaps if you want the richest luxury experience.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.8-liter V6 or a 5.0-liter V8, both paired with an 8-speed automatic. The V8 delivers swift, silent, effortless acceleration, while the V6 is the more accessible choice.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control with stop and go, forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. The lane system can show accuracy problems on narrow or multi-lane roads.
- Infotainment: The G80 5.0 uses an upgraded 9.2-inch touchscreen, and the Lexicon stereo has 17 speakers. It does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in this version, and traffic data did not display on the navigation map.
- Fuel efficiency: The V8 test car averaged 19.3 mpg, beating the EPA estimate of 18 mpg.
Which 2017 Genesis G80 trim should I buy?
The 2017 Genesis G80 is offered in 2 trim levels: 3.8, 5.0.
Here's the short version:
- 3.8: This is the value play if you want the G80 experience at the lower entry price. It gives you the 3.8-liter V6, rear-wheel drive or AWD, and the core luxury-sedan formula without stepping up to the V8.
- 5.0: This is the better choice if you want the strongest performance and the most fully loaded version of the car. The V8 brings 420 horsepower, the upgraded 9.2-inch touchscreen, and the 17-speaker Lexicon audio system, making it the best-fit trim for buyers who want the richest equipment and strongest presence.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Genesis G80?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 24.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 262 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.40% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,813.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Genesis G80's resale value?
The current average of $15,941 sits slightly below last year's $16,333.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make future depreciation feel less steep if you buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the range, you give yourself a better chance of limiting loss when it comes time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.93/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Genesis G80 safe?
Additionally, the Genesis G80 is a Top Safety Pick Plus according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns a five-star crash-test rating from the federal government's NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop and go capability, forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. The lane-departure and lane-keeping system can show accuracy problems when roads narrow or widen, so that is worth checking on a test drive.
Should I buy a 2017 Genesis G80 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 24.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.40% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.93/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 introduces Genesis branding and adds standard driver-assistance and collision-avoidance tech.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $19,478, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $15,941 average.
- It adds a Sport trim with a twin-turbo V6 and adaptive suspension.
The bottom line: If you want the better value proposition, the 2017 is the smarter buy because it delivers strong owner satisfaction, solid safety, and a lower average price. If you are willing to pay more for a more performance-focused setup, the 2018 is the better alternative.
