What should I look for when buying a used 2017 GMC Canyon?

At 66.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, frame condition, and signs of prior repair. Because this truck is often bought for capability, it’s also smart to focus on how hard the truck was used and whether the condition matches the seller’s claims.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Denali trim adds a special chrome mesh grille, 20-inch aluminum wheels, chrome side-step rails, a spray-in bedliner, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, a Bose premium sound system, and an 8-inch infotainment screen with navigation. It also brings forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning, while the standard truck equipment list includes a reversing camera.
• Powertrain: You can choose a gasoline V6 or a turbocharged diesel 4-cylinder. The V6 is described as robust and satisfying, while the diesel adds towing strength and improves fuel economy by 4 miles per gallon in combined driving.
• Safety package: Denali models include forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning. The truck also includes a reversing camera, Teen Driver technology, and a Rear Seat Reminder system.
• Infotainment: IntelliLink uses a responsive touchscreen with a logical menu structure, and the Denali adds an 8-inch screen with navigation. The system also supports smartphone projection and Siri Eyes Free.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 19 mpg in combined driving, and the diesel improves combined fuel economy by 4 miles per gallon.

Which 2017 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

The 2017 GMC Canyon is offered in 1 trim level: Denali.

Here's the short version:

The Denali is the trim to focus on if you want the most upscale Canyon experience, with the strongest mix of appearance upgrades, comfort features, and tech. It adds the 8-inch infotainment screen, navigation, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless charging, and the Bose audio system, so it’s the best fit if you want the Canyon to feel more premium than purely utilitarian.

It also brings useful safety equipment, including forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning, which makes it the most complete version of the truck from an equipment standpoint. If you want the Canyon for work-first use and don’t care about luxury touches, the broader lineup may be less relevant here, but the Denali is the clear choice in the data provided.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 GMC Canyon?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right truck.

• Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 686 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.68% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 66.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,803, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $20,158 sits slightly below last year's $20,927.

That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also temper near-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that pricing has softened rather than surged, so condition and equipment will matter a lot when it’s time to list the truck.

Strong owner satisfaction can still support demand, especially for a truck that buyers view as capable and efficient. Well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones, particularly if they present cleanly and have desirable equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 GMC Canyon safe?

The 2017 GMC Canyon earns a four-star overall crash test rating from NHTSA, mainly due to its three-star rollover resistance score.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Canyon includes a reversing camera as standard equipment, and Denali models add forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning. It also includes Teen Driver technology and a Rear Seat Reminder system, both of which are useful family-oriented features.

A major caveat is that you cannot get blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, or automatic emergency braking on this truck. That omission matters if you want the most modern collision-avoidance coverage, so safety-conscious used buyers should weigh that limitation carefully.

Should I buy a 2017 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 66.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.68% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 adds a new V6 with strong power and improved efficiency, plus Denali-specific tech and safety upgrades.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $18,672, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $20,158 average.
• It gives buyers a smaller truck option without forcing them into a full-size model.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2017 is the better pick because it combines solid market pricing, strong owner satisfaction, and meaningful equipment updates. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the Canyon’s core midsize-truck appeal.
