2017 GMC Acadia test drive
overall
A long-overdue redesign brings a smaller, lighter Acadia, with a fresh 4-cylinder engine, more power for the V6, and a brand new “All-Terrain” package to compete with the new generation of midsize crossovers, but towing and interior capacity take some major hits.
GM’s new C1 platform is the foundation for everything from the new Cadillac XT5 to the Chevy Traverse and Buick Enclave in its long-wheelbase form. After nearly 10 years of living on the Lambda, the Acadia is joining the prestigious C1 ranks for its 2017 redesign, and that means a shorter, narrower profile with a shorter wheelbase as well. More importantly, the Acadia shows up in 2017 with a brand new 4-cylinder engine, which contributes to an impressive 700-plus-pound weight loss.

Decent looking vehicle and I am concerned about any transmission or electrical problems.

This vehicle has excellent features things like, wireless phone charger, rear seat warmers and many other safety features. Great family vehicle and overall good value for median asking price. I would say the only thing missing is a turbo for additional fun but still very good torque and towing capacity. I would compare this to a Ford Explorer sport of like years.

Owners rate it 4.73/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with many drivers describing it as a great value for families and outdoor enthusiasts. It also emphasizes comfort and versatility, which usually matters in long-term ownership because those are the traits you live with every day.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by highlighting the Acadia’s improved efficiency and lighter design, both of which support easier day-to-day ownership. The cost-effectiveness notes also suggest that the well-equipped lower trims deliver a lot for the money.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by heavy family use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 GMC Acadia?
At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a lower asking price. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and evidence of prior bodywork so you can separate a good deal from a compromised one.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SL trim already includes a 7-inch touchscreen, reversing camera, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, tri-zone climate control, keyless ignition, heated mirrors, and a Wi-Fi hotspot, but you need to move up for AWD and more premium equipment.
- Powertrain: The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder is efficient but not quick, while the 3.6-liter V6 adds much stronger acceleration and better towing-oriented capability.
- Safety package: Driver Alert 1 adds blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors; Driver Alert II adds lane-keep assist, auto high beams, front parking sensors, and low-speed forward-collision warning with auto braking.
- Infotainment: The base system uses a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get an 8-inch screen, and the Denali adds navigation and a virtual gauge display.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter engine returns 21 mpg city, 26 highway, 23 combined in FWD form, while the AWD V6 is rated at 18 mpg city and 25 highway for a combined 21.
Which 2017 GMC Acadia trim should I buy?
The 2017 GMC Acadia is offered in 5 trim levels: SL, SLE1, SLE2, SLT1, SLT2.
Here's the short version:
- SL: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want a well-equipped SUV, because it already brings CarPlay, Android Auto, a reversing camera, tri-zone climate control, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- SLE1: This trim is mainly about adding AWD and LED running lights, so it makes sense if traction matters more to you than luxury features.
- SLE2: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the V6, heated front seats, a power liftgate, roof rails, remote ignition, and second-row captain’s chairs that improve access and family usability.
- SLT1: Choose this if you want a more upscale daily driver, since it adds leather, a Bose stereo, upgraded driver displays, and the Driver Alert 1 safety package.
- SLT2: This is the right pick if you want the most advanced safety and convenience content, including the Driver Alert II package, 20-inch wheels, heated second-row seats, and a trailering package.
The safety package content is strongest as you move up the range, and the lower trims miss some of the driver-assistance features that many used buyers now expect.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 GMC Acadia?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,854 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.06% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,094.58, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 GMC Acadia's resale value?
The current average of $13,090 sits slightly below last year's $14,885.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy well, the softer entry price can reduce your depreciation exposure compared with a year ago.
The strongest resale candidates will be the better-equipped trims with desirable safety and convenience features, especially if they have clean histories and solid maintenance records. Well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones because shoppers in this segment tend to value comfort, features, and condition.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 GMC Acadia safe?
The 2017 GMC Acadia earns four-star ratings in all NHTSA tests except frontal crash, where it earns five-star ratings.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, a full airbag suite, and Teen Driver technology. The available Driver Alert 1 package adds blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors, while Driver Alert II adds lane-keep assist, auto high beams, front parking sensors, and low-speed forward-collision warning with auto braking.
The main caveat is that the 2017 redesign does not match the prior model year’s stronger crash-test performance, so you should pay close attention to trim level if safety tech matters to you. The most advanced features are concentrated in the upper trims and optional packages.
Should I buy a 2017 GMC Acadia or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.06% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- GMC’s redesign brought a lighter body, better fuel economy, and a more modern footprint.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $15,549, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $13,090 average.
- V6 availability expands to more trims.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2017 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and a broad feature set. If you’re willing to spend more for wider V6 availability, the 2018 is the better path for shoppers who prioritize stronger power across more trims.
