CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 5,165 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,919.00, 31.2% of 2017 Ford Explorers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Ford Explorer 4.8 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Ford Explorer stands out as a midsize SUV that had already moved well beyond its truck-based roots by this point. In the fifth generation, it was based on Ford’s D4 platform, which also underpinned the Ford Taurus, Ford Freestyle, Mercury Montego, Lincoln MKS, and Ford Flex. That setup made it behave more like a front-wheel drive sedan in most cases, with all-wheel drive available as a side benefit, and it helped turn the Explorer into a family-friendly crossover rather than a traditional SUV. Ford also refreshed the Explorer’s styling and in-car tech in 2017, giving this model year a more current feel.
For 2017, the Explorer could be had with a 290 horsepower 3.5-liter V6, and later fifth-generation Explorers also offered a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 twin-turbo. The generation also brought modern infotainment systems, including Ford’s SYNC system, and buyers could add heated and ventilated front seats and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. Safety equipment was a strong point too, with available BLIS blind spot information system with rear cross traffic alert, forward-collision warning with emergency braking, automatic high beams, Roll Stability Control, electronic stability control, adaptive cruise control, active parking assist, and rain-sensing wipers. That mix of power, features, and available driver aids helps explain why the 2017 Explorer appealed to shoppers looking for a well-equipped three-row SUV.
At the same time, the 2017 Explorer was not the class leader in every respect. The source notes that the fifth-generation model rarely ranked at the top of its class in any one area, and that it had a worse reliability record than its new-school rivals. It also says the generation’s fuel economy was grim in its early form, and that later years were the ones to seek out because they had the fewest problems and the most modern features. Even so, the 2017 model remains attractive for buyers who want a roomy, capable SUV with a broad feature set and a more polished driving character than earlier Explorers.

Is the 2017 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Ford Explorer earns a 4.8/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Drivers consistently praise its smooth ride, spacious interior, and impressive features. Many also like its power and handling, especially with the EcoBoost engine. For you, that makes it a solid fit if you want a roomy three-row SUV that balances comfort with everyday usability.

Is the 2017 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a vehicle that many drivers find dependable over time, with praise centered on a smooth ride and a comfortable, spacious cabin. That said, some shoppers note missing features, so you should separate convenience complaints from true durability concerns.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is choosing a poorly maintained example, so condition and service history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Explorer?
At 64.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can catch hidden body, suspension, or repair issues. Focus closely on overall condition, because accident history can affect both long-term ownership confidence and resale value.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the best examples.
- Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,197 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.53% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,794.84, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $13,860 sits slightly below last year's $14,989.
That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays subdued. If you plan to sell later, a well-kept example with strong documentation should hold up better than one with accident history or visible wear.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.53% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,254, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,860 average.
- Ford refreshed it with updated styling, more features, and a new Platinum trim.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2017 is the better primary target. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the more price-sensitive alternative and may be worth a closer look.
