Why it stands out
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as a midsize sedan that Chevrolet had recently refined, with the brand described as perfecting its recipe just as buyers were moving toward family crossovers. It is also presented as a car that deserves more respect than it typically gets, thanks to its most recent redesign for the 2016 model year. That combination gives the Malibu a straightforward appeal: it aims to be a polished, modern family sedan in a market that was increasingly looking elsewhere.
What makes the 2017 Malibu appealing is the balance of comfort, features, and efficiency that owners commonly praise. Reviewers also pointed to its smooth driving experience and modern tech options such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. At the same time, some owners noted that it can be noisy and a little slow to get moving from a stop, and a few felt the price should be lower.

The car has all the features Im looking for, from great gas mileage to Apple CarPlay. Thee car is a great value for the money. The only feature this car is missing is an inverter, but those are only important on long road trips. I was also looking at the Hyundai Elantra, and this car is a close competition.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns a 4.3/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, features, and good gas mileage, and they also call out the smooth driving experience and modern tech like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. With 23.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?
Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that feels comfortable, efficient, and easy to live with, while also describing it as smooth and modern. The expert drive notes reinforce that sense of dependability by describing the Malibu as comfortable, safe, fuel efficient, and technologically advanced. Chevrolet also includes a rear seat reminder, which adds a practical ownership benefit for families.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure a specific car has been maintained well and hasn’t picked up hidden wear from prior use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?
At 53.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on bodywork quality, panel alignment, tire wear, and any signs that safety or driver-assistance systems were repaired poorly. It also makes sense to compare condition carefully against the asking price, since some listings may look attractive on paper but need extra scrutiny.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Malibu L starts with a lower equipment set, while the LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier add more content as you move up. The Premier trim stands out for its upscale presentation and stronger engine, while the base car is the one most likely to feel stripped compared with the higher trims.
- Powertrain: The Malibu offers a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic, a Hybrid rated at 46 mpg in combined driving, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder exclusive to Premier with a 9-speed automatic. The 2.0-liter setup is the most powerful and the most engaging, while the hybrid is the efficiency play.
- Safety package: Chevrolet bundles driver-assistance features into Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II on Premier. The first package adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights. The second package adds adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist.
- Infotainment: Chevrolet MyLink gains Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while also offering OnStar subscription services and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot connection. The system is presented as simple to use and logically laid out.
- Fuel efficiency: The Hybrid is rated at 46 mpg in combined driving, and the Premier with the 2.0-liter turbo is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2017 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 5 trim levels: Malibu L, LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- Malibu L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the redesigned Malibu. It gives you the core sedan experience, but you should expect the fewest features and the least upscale feel.
- Malibu LS: This is the first step up and a sensible choice if you want a little more equipment without chasing the highest prices. It should be the trim to compare first if you want value without stretching too far.
- Malibu LT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and should balance price, features, and everyday usability well. If you want a Malibu that feels well equipped without paying Premier money, this is the trim to focus on.
- Malibu Hybrid: Choose this if fuel economy is your top priority and you want the efficiency-focused version of the Malibu. It is the clear pick for shoppers who care most about mpg.
- Malibu Premier: This is the most upscale and most powerful version, with the exclusive 2.0-liter turbo engine and the richest available safety and convenience content. Buy this if you want the strongest performance and the most premium feel.
For safety-minded shoppers, note that the Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II packages are bundled on Premier rather than being standard across the lineup.

- Inventory: There are 1,819 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.58% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 53.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,814.70, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?
The current average of $10,983 sits slightly below last year's $11,633.
That price movement suggests the Malibu has softened enough to create a more buyer-friendly entry point today. For a future seller, that can mean less upside if the market stays soft, but it also means your purchase price may already reflect some of the depreciation. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you give yourself a better chance of limiting the hit when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from the IIHS, and the federal government gives it five-star ratings across the board, except for four-star ratings for the front passenger in a frontal impact and for rollover resistance.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Chevrolet includes a full slate of driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems, with Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II bundled on Premier. Those packages add forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, lane-change alert, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and parking assist. The rear seat reminder is another useful family-oriented safety feature.
One caveat is the IIHS headlight result, which keeps the Malibu from reaching an even higher safety distinction.
Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 23.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.58% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 Malibu adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a strong expert-rated technology score.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,679, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,983 average.
- It was fully redesigned to bring fresh engines, stronger styling, and a more spacious interior.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced choice, the 2017 is the stronger pick because it combines modern tech, solid safety, and a softer price trend. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the value alternative, especially if you find one in excellent condition.
