How much does the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu cost?

Prices have softened 6.33% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,837 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?

Generally — the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns a 4.3/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, features, good gas mileage, smooth driving experience, and modern tech like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Malibu is framed as a well-rounded family sedan that feels modern and thoughtfully executed, especially if you want a conventional car rather than a crossover.

The market also shows 27.6% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in everyday use, with comfort, good gas mileage, and a smooth driving experience coming up repeatedly. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Malibu is enjoyable to drive and technologically advanced, which supports the sense that it is a car you can count on for regular commuting and family duty.

Chevrolet also adds a maintenance-friendly angle through its broader ownership appeal and value positioning, which can help reduce the sting of long-term running costs. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been cared for well, since condition and prior use matter more than the model’s overall reputation.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?

At 52% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage or repeated repairs. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on body condition, panel fit, interior wear, and whether the car matches its photos and description. Because some owners mention quality concerns and noise, it also makes sense to pay close attention to how the car feels on a test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Malibu lineup ranges from the base L through LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier, and the base car starts with a much simpler equipment set than the upper trims. The Premier stands out for its more upscale presentation and stronger engine choice, while the lower trims are the ones most likely to leave you wanting more features.
• Powertrain: The standard setup is a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic, while the Premier gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with a 9-speed automatic. The hybrid is the efficiency play, rated at 46 mpg in combined driving.
• Safety package: The Premier can be equipped with Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II. Those packages add forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, lane-change alert, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, parking sensors, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and parking assist.
• Infotainment: Chevrolet MyLink adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with OnStar subscription services and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The system is presented as easy to use and feature-rich.
• Fuel efficiency: The hybrid is rated at 46 mpg in combined driving, and the Premier is described as returning 26 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2017 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense only if you want the lowest purchase price and are comfortable with a stripped-down setup.
• LS: This is the first trim where the Malibu starts to feel more like a mainstream family sedan, making it a sensible step up if you want better everyday livability without chasing luxury features.
• LT: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and gives you a more complete ownership experience without jumping to the top-end price.
• Hybrid: Choose this if fuel economy is your top priority and you want the Malibu’s efficiency-focused powertrain.
• Premier: This is the one to buy if you want the strongest engine, the most upscale feel, and the most complete feature set.

For safety, the Premier is the trim tied to the Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II packages, so if those features matter to you, shop that trim carefully.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can find value if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,837 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.33% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 52.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,744, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?

The current average of $10,744 sits slightly below last year's $11,471.

That price movement suggests the Malibu has softened enough to create a more buyer-friendly entry point today. For a future seller, that means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim, because the market is already pricing in some depreciation. Well-kept examples should still attract interest, but you should expect buyers to be selective.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu safe?

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns Top Safety Pick Plus recognition from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA, except for four-star ratings for the front passenger in a frontal impact and for rollover resistance.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Chevrolet includes Rear Seat Reminder to help prevent you from leaving a child or pet in the car, and the Malibu also offers a broad suite of driver-assistance features. The Driver Confidence Package adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, lane-change alert, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights. Driver Confidence II adds adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist.

One caveat is that the headlights are rated Poor by IIHS, which is why the Malibu needs better lighting to reach its full safety potential.

Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.33% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 stands out for its refined redesign, strong tech, and well-rounded family-car character.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $9,748, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,744 average.
• The redesign brought a more modern feel, better efficiency, and stronger tech and safety features.

The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced Malibu with stronger tech and a more polished overall package, the 2017 is the smarter target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the value play and still gives you the benefits of the redesign.
