CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW 6 Series

Summary
With 157 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,498, 31.2% of 2017 BMW 6 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW 6 Series 4.88 / 5 stars.
54.1% of 2017 BMW 6 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 6 Series stands out as a style-first luxury performance car, and its appeal comes from that mix of glamour and driving enjoyment. Owners praise its stylish design, strong performance, comfort, and handling, and the car’s character is often described as a blend of sports car and luxury. That combination makes it attractive to buyers who want something more distinctive than a conventional luxury sedan.
What also defines the 2017 BMW 6 Series is that it belongs to a lineup known for being rewarding to drive but not especially practical. The broader 6 Series family is described as expensive to buy and maintain, and the model is less practical than BMW’s similar four-door cars. For shoppers, that means the 2017 6 Series is best understood as an emotional purchase: it offers exclusivity, luxury features, and engaging dynamics, but it asks buyers to accept higher ownership costs and limited everyday usefulness.
The 6 Series name also carries a strong reputation for performance and style across its history, which helps explain why this car continues to draw interest on the used market. Even so, the 2017 model’s appeal is not about being the most sensible choice; it is about delivering a glamorous, rewarding driving experience in a package that feels special.

Car is beautiful design inside and out...I compared to Mercedes CLS 400. BMW heads up display was great, seat comfort a little better than CLS, instant throttle response (no turbo lag) and superior brakes...more blind spots and felt heavier than CLS (although specs would disagree)

Great styling, great performance. Is not a boxster Porsche, but not a luxury Mercedes SLK. Is the perfect mix of sports car and luxury.

Is the 2017 BMW 6 Series a good car?
Yes — the 4.88/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its stylish design, impressive performance, comfort, and handling, and the car’s personality is often described as a blend of sports car and luxury. That makes it a strong fit if you want a distinctive luxury performance car rather than a conventional sedan. With 31.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 BMW 6 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on comfort, performance, and the kind of driving experience people tend to keep for the long term. That said, this is still a luxury performance model, so used buyers should expect ownership risk to be more about maintenance exposure than basic durability.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 6 Series?
At 54.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on bodywork quality, alignment, and signs of uneven wear or repair. Because this model is valued for style and driving feel, pay close attention to cosmetic condition, panel fit, and how the car presents overall.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 6 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to be picky if you shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 157 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,175, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW 6 Series's resale value?
The current average of $22,997 sits slightly below last year's $23,781.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the car in strong condition, because a softer market rewards clean, well-kept examples more than average ones. Strong presentation and documented care matter even more when the model is already positioned as a niche luxury choice.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 6 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
The 2017 is the right pick if you want the classic 6 Series formula: style, comfort, and a rewarding driving experience, with enough market softness to make shopping more flexible. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a nearby model year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 stands out as a compelling choice when you want the balance of owner satisfaction and current pricing.
