CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW 6 Series

Summary
With 160 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,001.00, 31.3% of 2017 BMW 6 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW 6 Series 4.88 / 5 stars.
48.8% of 2017 BMW 6 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 6 Series stands out as a style-first luxury performance car, and in BMW’s lineup it represents the third-generation coupe, convertible, and four-door Gran Coupe family. That generation was expanded beyond the two-door body styles with the addition of the low-slung four-door Gran Coupe, giving the 6 Series a broader range of personalities while keeping its rakish profile. It was also offered with xDrive all-wheel drive on many versions, and BMW’s Alpina B6 gave well-heeled buyers an even more exclusive factory-tuned option.
What makes the 2017 model appealing is the way it blends strong performance with a comfortable, upscale cabin. The mainstream 6 Series models used an eight-speed automatic transmission, and BMW’s 2016 tech update brought a 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen running iDrive 6.0. The car also offered driver-assistance features such as blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control, though most were optional. At the same time, it remained a stylish grand tourer with a soft design that had aged better than some more controversial BMW shapes.
There are tradeoffs, though. The back seat is snug even in the Gran Coupe, and the car is expensive to maintain. Reliability data on the model as a whole is thin, but the 640i models are described as the most trouble-free of the bunch, while the M6 is the most high-strung. For buyers who want exclusivity, luxury, and engaging driving dynamics in one package, the 2017 BMW 6 Series has a lot of appeal, even if practicality is not its strong suit.

Car is beautiful design inside and out...I compared to Mercedes CLS 400. BMW heads up display was great, seat comfort a little better than CLS, instant throttle response (no turbo lag) and superior brakes...more blind spots and felt heavier than CLS (although specs would disagree)

Great styling, great performance. Is not a boxster Porsche, but not a luxury Mercedes SLK. Is the perfect mix of sports car and luxury.

2017 BMW 6 Series Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2017 BMW 6 Series prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2017 BMW 6 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,760 |
| Year-Round Low | $22,171.51 |
| Year-Round High | $26,189.86 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,390 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.69% |
Prices have softened 6.69% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 162 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $22,171.51, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 BMW 6 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2017 BMW 6 Series earns a 4.88/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners consistently praise its stylish design, impressive performance, comfort, and handling. That lines up well with its role as a style-first luxury performance car, especially if you want a grand tourer feel rather than maximum practicality. The overview also makes clear that it suits buyers who value exclusivity, luxury, and engaging driving dynamics more than rear-seat space.
With 34.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a compelling example if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 BMW 6 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many drivers enjoy living with, especially for its comfort and performance balance. The review summary also highlights the model’s stylish design and strong driving character, while the overview notes that the 640i models are described as the most trouble-free of the bunch.
For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is likely to depend heavily on how the car was maintained and which version you choose.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 6 Series?
At 51.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage or lower-priced listing. Focus on overall condition, because this is a luxury performance car where maintenance and repair costs can matter as much as the sticker price.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 6 Series?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and disciplined.
- Deal availability: 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 162 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.69% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 51.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,171.51, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW 6 Series's resale value?
The current average of $22,760 sits slightly below last year's $24,390.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has softened, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also mean future resale gains are limited. If you plan to sell later, the best examples will be the ones with strong condition, clean history, and clear maintenance records. Well-kept cars tend to hold buyer interest better, especially in a niche luxury-performance segment like this.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 6 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 51.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the 6 Series at a softer market price and you’re willing to be selective about condition and history, the 2017 model year is a sensible target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than chasing the lowest sticker alone.
