Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 5 Series stands out as a full redesign that brings a fresh chassis, new engines, an updated iDrive interface, and a range of innovative technologies. BMW also used high-strength lightweight materials, so the car grew in size without gaining weight. The result is a midsize luxury sedan that feels like a meaningful step forward rather than a simple styling update.
It also has a more driver-focused character than its understated appearance might suggest. The new engines increased power without increasing consumption, and the car’s design nods back toward the 5 Series’ traditional role as a driver’s car. One limitation is that it no longer offers a manual transmission, which may matter to buyers who value that kind of involvement.

This turned out to be a base model with almost zero extra features other than a sunshade and all wheel drive with the upgraded engine. However i was anticipating a luxury sedan and got a luxury performance sedan. I was greatly surprised with the acceleration coupled with the ride quality and numerous technology features. I am going from a 2011 Cadillac cts coupe performance trim and the bmw is comparable in ride quality, but head and shoulders above it in acceleration and braking ability.

How much does the 2017 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,098 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,722 |
| Year-Round High | $17,999 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,850 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.22% |
Prices have softened 4.22% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,141 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Generally — the 4/5 user rating and 7.83/10 expert rating point to a strong overall showing for this model year. The 2017 redesign brings a fresh chassis, new engines, an updated iDrive interface, and a more driver-focused character, while still fitting the midsize luxury sedan role well. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.
That combination makes it appealing if you want a luxury sedan that feels modern, tech-forward, and more athletic than its understated styling suggests. 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2017 redesign uses high-strength lightweight materials and a new chassis, which supports the sense of a more substantial and refined car. The expert evaluation also points to a well-built, balanced chassis, a sorted suspension, and an intelligent automatic transmission, all of which are encouraging signs for everyday durability.
The turbocharged engines are described as strong and efficient, and the 8-speed automatic is presented as a major strength. If you buy used, the biggest long-term ownership risk is that the car can become expensive quickly once options and maintenance needs stack up.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?
At 60.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher mileage or extensive option content. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s technology and driver-assistance features are functioning as intended. Because this model can be heavily optioned, you should also confirm that the equipment on the car you’re considering matches the seller’s description.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 530i offers the updated turbo 2.0-liter engine and a lower starting price, while the 540i adds a turbo inline six and the M550i brings a twin-turbo V8. The base car is the best-value choice if you want the core chassis, transmission, and efficiency without chasing expensive extras.
- Powertrain: The 530i uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the 540i’s turbo six makes 335 hp and 332 lb-ft. The M550i’s twin-turbo V8 delivers 462 hp and 479 lb-ft. The 530i is rated at 24 mpg city and 34 highway, with a combined rating of 27.
- Safety package: The car offers blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. Some of these systems are optional, so verify the exact equipment on the car you’re considering.
- Infotainment: The sixth generation of iDrive is the centerpiece, and the car can be equipped with gesture control, a heads-up display, and Apple CarPlay. Android Auto is not available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 530i is rated at 24 mpg city and 34 highway, with a combined rating of 27.
Which 2017 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?
The 2017 BMW 5 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 530i, 540i, M550i.
Here's the short version:
- 530i: This is the best-value trim if you want the redesigned chassis, the strong turbo four, and the core luxury and tech experience without jumping deep into the options list.
- 540i: Choose this if you want a clear step up in power from the six-cylinder engine and can justify the higher price for stronger passing performance.
- M550i: Pick this if you want the most performance in the lineup, with the twin-turbo V8 delivering the quickest acceleration.
The safety package is a major strength, with a Top Safety Pick+ rating and a five-star government safety rating.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,141 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.22% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,722, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $17,098 sits slightly below last year's $17,850.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means resale will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment, since well-kept examples should stand out more clearly in a crowded market.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series safe?
The 2017 BMW 5 Series earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, receiving Good scores in all IIHS tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The car offers blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. Some of these features are optional, so the exact safety setup can vary by car.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It’s a full redesign with a fresh chassis, new engines, and an updated iDrive interface.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $18,347, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $17,098 average.
- It adds the 530e plug-in hybrid, giving you a more frugal option.
The bottom line: If you want the better-value buy, the 2017 is the smarter starting point because it delivers the redesign and strong tech at a lower average price. If efficiency matters more than price, the 2018 is worth a look for its plug-in hybrid option.
