How much does the 2017 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 3.00% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,106 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of cars to compare.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2017 BMW 5 Series earns a 4/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.

It’s a full redesign with a fresh chassis, new engines, an updated iDrive interface, and lightweight materials that help it grow in size without gaining weight. That lines up with a midsize luxury sedan that feels more modern and more driver-focused than its understated styling suggests.

35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2017 5 Series is described as a well-built sedan with a balanced chassis, sorted suspension, comfortable interior, and capable transmission. Its new engines are presented as strong performers, and the model’s lightweight construction helps keep the car from feeling bloated despite its size.

The ownership tradeoff is that the car can become expensive and complex once you start adding options, so used buyers should pay close attention to equipment, maintenance history, and whether the car has been heavily optioned.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?

At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether the car has had any collision repairs, since accident history can matter a lot on a luxury sedan with lots of technology. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on the condition of the chassis, suspension, brakes, and electronics, especially if the car has been optioned heavily. You’ll also want to compare equipment carefully, because some desirable features were optional rather than standard.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 530i is the value play if you want the strongest balance of price and capability, while the 540i adds more power and the M550i brings the top-end V8 performance. The base car can be appealing if you want the essentials without the cost creep of the options list.
• Powertrain: The 530i uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, the 540i uses a turbo inline-six with 335 hp and 332 lb-ft, and the M550i uses a twin-turbo V8 with 462 hp and 479 lb-ft. The four-cylinder is praised as one of the best engines in its class, while the six-cylinder avoids the passing hesitation the four can show at highway speeds.
• Safety package: The car offers blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. Some of the most advanced capability is tied to options, so check carefully before assuming a used example has everything.
• Infotainment: The sixth-generation iDrive system is a major strength, and the car can be fitted with gesture control. Apple CarPlay is available, but Android Auto is not mentioned.
• Fuel efficiency: The 530i is rated at 24 mpg city and 34 highway for a combined 27 mpg.

Which 2017 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2017 BMW 5 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 530i, 540i, M550i.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the best-value trim if you want the core 5 Series experience without jumping too far up the price ladder. It gets the updated turbo four-cylinder, strong efficiency, and the same modern chassis and tech foundation as the rest of the lineup.
• 540i: This is the sweet spot if you want a noticeable jump in performance without going all the way to the V8. The turbo inline-six delivers much stronger acceleration and is the better choice if you care about effortless passing power.
• M550i: Choose this if you want the quickest and most powerful version in the lineup. The twin-turbo V8 makes it the performance flagship, but it also pushes you much farther up the price scale.

The safety content notes that the car earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating and top scores of Good in all tests.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?

This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.

• Deal availability: 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,106 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.00% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,715, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $17,260 sits slightly below last year's $17,794.

That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more car for the money now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than on broad market momentum alone.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2017 BMW 5 Series earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, receiving Good scores in all tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The car’s safety suite includes blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. Some of the most advanced driver-assistance capability is tied to options, so a used example may not have every feature you expect.

Should I buy a 2017 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.00% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It’s a full redesign with a new chassis, new engines, and updated iDrive.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $18,162, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $17,260 average.
• It adds the 530e plug-in hybrid, giving the lineup a more frugal option.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, inventory, and the redesigned 5 Series experience, the 2017 is the stronger buy. If efficiency matters more than price, the 2018’s plug-in hybrid addition makes it worth a look.
