Overview

When you think of the German automaker Volkswagen, you picture affordable Euro-style cars like the iconic Beetle, the sporty Golf, or the touring-oriented Jetta and Passat. The 2016 Volkswagen Touareg midsize crossover ute is, therefore, a bit of a rogue, and also a bit on the pricey side. But this certainly hasn’t lessened its appeal. The 5-passenger 5-door Touareg, which shares a platform with the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, offers a good all-around option for families on daily commutes, vacations, or even trips to the mall. With its truck-like frame and standard full-time all-wheel drive (AWD), the Touareg performs tolerably well off-road, and has a class-leading towing capacity of 7,716 pounds.
Unfortunately, the Touareg Hybrid has been dropped from the lineup due to sluggish sales--this is the only notable change from the 2015 model year. The 2016 Touareg is offered as a gasoline-powered VR6 or a diesel TDI, with both powerplants grouped into the base Sport trim, the midlevel Lux, and the flagship Executive.
Powering the 2016 Touareg VR6 is a 3.6-liter normally aspirated V6 engine managed by the traditional 8-speed shiftable automatic transmission. Look for 280 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque from the V6, with mileage figures estimated at 17 mpg city/23 highway/19 combined.
The 2016 Touareg TDI trims, meanwhile, pack a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 powerplant that puts out 240 hp and a hefty 406 lb-ft of torque, also paired with the 8-speed shiftable automatic. Estimated mileage remains 21/29/24, while a properly fitted TDI will feature the 7,000-plus-pound towing capacity.
All 2016 Touareg variants again boast a stylish profile and plush interior. Outside, depending on the selected trim, the Touareg features 18-, 19-, or 20-inch alloy wheels, a roof rack, power-folding mirrors, a power sunroof, and a power liftgate. On the inside, look for leather upholstery, heated power-adjustable front seats, memory for driver settings, reclining rear seats, and full power accessories. Cruise control, telescoping tilt-wheel steering, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a remote garage door opener are also standard across the 2016 Touareg lineup. Higher trims get power-folding rear seats standard, along with the Technology Driver Assistance package, which includes a trailer hitch, a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry and ignition, GPS navigation, and an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen. Standard technology in the Sport and Lux trims includes Bluetooth hands-free calling, a CD/MP3 player, 8 speakers, satellite radio, a memory card slot, and an auxiliary audio input.
The top-shelf 2016 Touareg Executive trim adds a power-adjustable steering-wheel, heated rear seats, an overhead-view camera, and a 10-speaker Dynaudio sound system. The only noteworthy option for the 2016 Touareg is a set of 21-inch alloy wheels that are available on the Lux and Executive trims.
Cargo space in all Touareg variations checks in at a hefty 64 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks folded.
Look for the 2016 Touareg to include 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front side-mounted airbags, front and rear head curtain airbags, daytime running lights, turn-signal-integrated mirrors, adaptive high-intensity-discharge headlights, cornering lights, a post-collision safety system, and a remote antitheft alarm. Those trims sporting the Technology Driver Assistance package additionally get such included safety features as blind-spot warning, adaptive cruise control, frontal collision-mitigation braking, and lane-departure alerts. No government safety data is available for the 2016 Touareg, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives it a top score of Good in all tests.
The 2016 Touareg is again challenged by models like the Lexus RX, Ford Edge, Nissan Murano, and Jeep Grand Cherokee for midsize mini-ute supremacy. All these competitors are, according to reviewers, worth a serious look before you start shelling out any cash.

Great overall vehicle. Excellent craftsmanship and finish materials. Very good off road, in the snow and plenty of power on the highway. Sad Volkswagen discontinued building it.

Great car. it is well engineered, thoughtfully created for enthusiastic drivers and very comfortable. I love it very much. It is the cheap little brother for the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, but it does not lack much. It is definitely a good value.

How much does the 2016 Volkswagen Touareg cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $13,782 |
| Year-Round Low | $12,877 |
| Year-Round High | $14,638 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,648 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.91% |
Prices have softened 5.91% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 102 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2016 Volkswagen Touareg a good car?
Generally — the 2016 Volkswagen Touareg earns a 4.14/5 user rating, which points to solid owner satisfaction. Owners commonly praise its excellent engineering, comfort, and reliability, and many also like its performance, including snappy acceleration and solid handling. The main tradeoffs mentioned are repair costs and an outdated navigation system. With 36.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Volkswagen Touareg reliable?
Owners rate it 4.14/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliability, dependability, and a vehicle that many drivers feel comfortable counting on over time. That said, some owners mention repair costs and issues involving coolant and emissions when warranty coverage is no longer in place. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is manageable, but you should pay close attention to maintenance history and repair exposure.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volkswagen Touareg?
At 66.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on bodywork quality, mechanical condition, and signs of unresolved issues. It also makes sense to pay close attention to maintenance records, especially if you want to reduce the chance of surprise repair costs later.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Volkswagen Touareg?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 36.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 102 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.91% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,877, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Volkswagen Touareg's resale value?
The current average of $13,782 sits slightly below last year's $14,648.
That softer pricing can work in your favor if you buy now and hold the vehicle well, because you may be starting from a more favorable entry point. If the market stays steady, a well-kept example should be easier to position competitively later than one bought at a higher price point. Strong maintenance records and clean history will matter most when it comes time to resell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.14/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Volkswagen Touareg or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 36.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.91% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.14/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current pricing, owner satisfaction, and available inventory, the 2016 is a reasonable place to focus your search. If you're especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a cleaner or better-equipped listing appears at a similar price, but the 2016 already gives you a workable balance of value and buyer confidence.
