Is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta a good car?

Yes — the 4.67/5 user rating and 7.67/10 expert rating both point to a strong overall showing. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

You also get recurring praise for the Jetta’s solid feel, fun driving experience, great fuel economy, and spacious interior. In practical terms, that makes it a good fit if you want a compact sedan that feels more substantial than its size suggests and still works well for commuting or family duty. 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta reliable?

Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The user feedback points to a reliable, dependable-feeling car with a solid feel and strong fuel economy, which are encouraging signs for everyday ownership. The expert notes also emphasize improved build quality and say the current crop has shown tremendous improvement over earlier VW/Audi problem years. On the ownership side, the new turbo engine brings better efficiency and stronger performance, but used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and how the turbo system has aged.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volkswagen Jetta?

At 49.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one with missing equipment. Focus on overall condition, evidence of prior bodywork, and whether the car’s features match the trim you expect. Because some owners mentioned missing features and turbo responsiveness concerns, it is worth checking that the car drives cleanly and that all electronics work as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 1.4T S starts with 15-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, keyless entry, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, full power, air conditioning, and a 5-inch touchscreen. The S Tech Package adds a 6.3-inch touchscreen, USB port, satellite radio, rear-view camera, and smartphone integration, while the 1.4T SE adds 16-inch alloys, push-button start, and heated front seats. The 1.8T SEL adds a softer suspension tune, unique 17-inch alloys, keyless entry and ignition, an upgraded interior, automatic headlights and wipers, and a sunroof. The best-value trim is the 1.4T SE if you want a stronger feature mix without moving too far upmarket.
• Powertrain: The new 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder makes 150 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque from just 1,400 rpm, and it is paired with either a 6-speed automatic or 5-speed manual. The 1.8-liter turbo adds more power up high, while the 2.0-liter turbo is the quickest option with 210 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance package on 1.8T trims adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal collision avoidance with automatic braking. Standard safety equipment includes traction and stability control, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, front-side and side-curtain airbags, and active head restraints. The package is especially worth seeking out if you want more advanced driver assistance.
• Infotainment: The upgraded setup centers on a 6.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus an actual USB port. That combination is a major usability upgrade over the older proprietary connection.
• Fuel efficiency: The 1.4-liter turbo returns 28 mpg city/39 highway/32 combined with the 6-speed automatic, or 33 combined with the 5-speed manual. The 1.8-liter turbo is rated at 25 mpg city/36 highway/29 combined with the 6-speed automatic, while the 2.0-liter turbo returns 24 mpg city/33 highway/27 combined with the manual and 24 mpg city/33 highway/27 combined with the DSG.

Which 2016 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 4 trim levels: 1.4T S, 1.4T SE, 1.8T Sport, 1.8T SEL.

Here's the short version:

• 1.4T S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the basics plus a 5-inch touchscreen, but you may want the available S Tech Package if you care about smartphone integration and a rear-view camera.
• 1.4T SE: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds 16-inch alloys, push-button start, and heated front seats without pushing you into the pricier turbo trims.
• 1.8T Sport: Choose this if you want the larger engine and a sport suspension, but you are willing to give up the sunroof that comes on the SEL.
• 1.8T SEL: This is the most upscale choice, with a softer suspension tune, unique 17-inch alloys, keyless entry and ignition, an upgraded interior, automatic headlights and wipers, and a sunroof.

The Driver Assistance package on 1.8T trims is the safety upgrade to target if you want the most advanced accident-avoidance tech.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Volkswagen Jetta?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,032 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.79% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 49.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $8,818, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?

The current average of $9,034 sits slightly below last year's $9,489.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, which can put some pressure on future resale if you buy at the wrong price. For a seller, the upside is that the Jetta still has a broad audience thanks to its fuel economy, safety, and practical interior space. If you buy carefully and keep the car in strong condition, you should have a reasonable path to holding value better than a neglected example.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta safe?

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal impact tests, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it its highest rating of Good in all tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The available Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal collision avoidance with automatic braking. Standard safety equipment includes traction and stability control, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, front-side and side-curtain airbags, and active head restraints. The main caveat is that some of the more advanced safety tech is not standard across the lineup, so trim choice matters if you want the fullest protection suite.

Should I buy a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 49.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.79% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The new 1.4-liter turbocharged engine and touchscreen upgrades make it feel much more modern.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $8,044, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $9,034 average.
• It suits buyers who want a more engaging daily driver with broad practical use.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,434, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $9,034 average.
• It adds a simpler lineup and a standard reversing camera on all trims.

The bottom line: The 2016 is the sweet spot if you want the newer engine, better tech, and strong safety without paying 2017 prices. If your priority is saving money, the 2015 is the value play, but the 2016 is the better all-around buy for most shoppers.
