Used 2016 Volkswagen Golf R for Sale nearPhiladelphia, PA

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Golf R a good car?

Yes — 5/5 is the user rating for the 2016 Volkswagen Golf R, and that lines up with a car that blends compact-hatchback practicality with serious performance and standard all-wheel drive. It uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, sends power through 4Motion all-wheel drive, and delivers 296 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, so you get a clear performance edge over the regular Golf GTI. It also comes only as a five-door model, which helps keep it useful for everyday driving. With 35.6% of listings priced as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Golf R reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The 2016 Volkswagen Golf R is described as generally solid on reliability, but not flawless, with coolant leaks and water pump failures noted as possible issues. That means you can feel good about the car’s overall reputation, but you should still plan for careful maintenance and a thorough pre-purchase check to reduce long-term ownership risk.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volkswagen Golf R?

At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important. You should run a vehicle history report and prioritize examples with clean records, then inspect the car closely for signs of past bodywork or uneven wear. Focus on overall condition, maintenance documentation, and any evidence of cooling-system issues, since those are the kinds of details that matter most on a used performance hatch.

Should I buy a 2016 Volkswagen Golf R or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

Consider the 2017 if:

• It adds more standard safety tech, navigation, and Dynamic Chassis Control.

The bottom line: The 2016 is the better primary pick if you want the manual-transmission Golf R with strong performance, standard all-wheel drive, and a well-equipped cabin. If you’re price-sensitive and willing to compare across years, the 2017 is worth a look for its added equipment, but you should expect to pay more for that extra content.
