CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 2,156 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,245.00, 29.6% of 2016 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota Tacoma 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
59.8% of 2016 Tacoma models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a redesigned midsize pickup that was built to defend a long-running lead in a crowded segment. It can be configured 29 different ways, and buyers can choose between two cab styles: the extended Access Cab or the 4-door Double Cab. Each is available with rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive, giving the Tacoma a broad range of setups for drivers who want a truck that is easier to live with than a full-size pickup.
What has long made the Tacoma appealing is its reputation. It has been a go-to choice for off-roaders, outdoor enthusiasts, and professionals who need capability without the bulk of a larger truck. Toyota’s own description emphasizes the Tacoma’s capability, reliability, and predictability, and those traits have helped it build one of the most solid pickup reputations out there. Owner feedback reinforces that image, with praise for reliability, resale value, and long-lasting performance, though some shoppers may still have concerns about pricing, minor issues, and interior storage.

Sleek styling. 4x4, long bed, 6 cylinder. It has “go” power. 4 doors makes it comfortable for passengers.

Toyota are great mid-size trucks that last forever however, I'm only 6ft and I had a hard time fitting in the truck.

We purchased the 2016 Tacoma. We had running boards added as part of the purchase. The storage compartments are of good size. The phone sync and navigation systems were easy to set up. The manual was easy to follow. It is a nice ride.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used off-road or for towing. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of wear that could affect long-term ownership costs. Because this model year is a redesign, it’s also smart to confirm that any equipment you care about is actually present on the specific truck you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup starts with the hard-working SR and continues to the well-equipped SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and the range-topping Limited. SRs and SR5s feature fabric-trimmed seats, while the Limited gets premium leather. Some high points like Qi wireless charging, climate control, touchscreen audio, push-button start, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts are available rather than universal, so base trucks can feel sparse.
- Powertrain: The Tacoma offers a carried-over 2.7-liter 4-cylinder and a new 3.5-liter V6. The V6 is more powerful and efficient, and it uses an Atkinson-cycle strategy with VVT-iW and D-4S direct and port fuel injection. Either engine can be paired with a new 6-speed automatic, while manuals are a 5-speed for the 4-cylinder and a 6-speed for the V6.
- Safety package: The Toyota Star Safety System™ includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. The airbag system includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts are available, not standard across the lineup.
- Infotainment: SR5s feature Entune Audio Plus with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and the Scout GPS Link navigation app. TRD Tacomas get Entune Premium Audio with navigation, an App Suite, and a 7-inch touchscreen, while Limited models carry the Entune Premium JBL Audio system. Standard Bluetooth hands-free integration, audio streaming, Siri® Eyes Free, touchscreen controls, and voice recognition are included, but there is no WiFi hotspot capability.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4-cylinder returns 19 mpg city/23 highway/21 combined with RWD, and 19/21 with 4WD and the manual or 19/22 with 4WD and the automatic. The V6 returns 19/24 with RWD and 18/23 with 4WD. The TRD 4WD Off-Road tested at 18 mpg city/23 highway.
Which 2016 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 5 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR is the most stripped-down choice, with fabric-trimmed seats and standard Entune audio, so you give up many of the comfort and convenience features found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SR5 is the best value pick if you want a more usable daily driver, since it adds Entune Audio Plus with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and Scout GPS Link navigation app.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most upscale choice, with premium leather and the Entune Premium JBL Audio system as standard equipment.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Off-Road is the one to choose if you want the most trail-focused setup, with extra skidplates, Bilstein suspension dampers, and a suspension tuned for off-road use.
The safety package centers on the Toyota Star Safety System™, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts is available on higher-spec trucks.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting deep distress pricing.
- Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,217 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.90% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,320.04, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $24,278 sits slightly below last year's $24,749.
That small decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now. For a future seller, the Tacoma’s pricing still looks resilient because demand remains supported by its reputation and strong owner satisfaction. If you keep mileage, condition, and history in good shape, you should have a better shot at preserving value than many rivals.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota Tacoma safe?
It earns Good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for most tests, though it received a Marginal score for roof strength on the prior model.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Tacoma comes with the Toyota Star Safety System™, which includes vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock braking, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop brake-override technology. It also includes driver and passenger knee airbags, roll-sensing side curtain airbags, and active headrests for the front seats. Available 4WD aids like Multi-terrain Select and Crawl Control add confidence when conditions get rough. The main caveat is that pickups are inherently more rollover-prone than sedans, so you should pay close attention to tire condition, braking feel, and overall stability during your inspection.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.90% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 redesign brings a new V6, more tech, and a broader trim lineup.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $20,272, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $24,278 average.
- It is a more old-school, capability-first truck with a clear off-road identity.
The bottom line: If you want the newer redesign, broader trim choice, and stronger everyday livability, the 2016 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is spending less and you’re comfortable with a more specialized, older-school truck, the 2015 can still make sense.
