CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
overall

Summary
With 255 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,251.00, 27.5% of 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrids for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
65.5% of 2016 RAV4 Hybrid models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid stands out by bringing a hybrid drivetrain to a crossover SUV in a way that aims to deliver both efficiency and everyday usefulness. Toyota presents it as a vehicle that can be more efficient, more capable, and more versatile, which is the core of its appeal. Rather than feeling like a niche experiment, it is positioned as a compact SUV that tries to combine the strengths buyers want from the segment with the benefits of hybrid power.
What makes it especially distinctive is that Toyota says it is unlike other hybrid SUVs people may have seen before. The RAV4 Hybrid is described as competing in the hot-selling compact SUV segment, where it is framed against familiar names such as the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V. That gives it a broader, more mainstream mission than a typical hybrid, while also suggesting that its value lies in offering hybrid efficiency without giving up the practicality shoppers expect from a crossover.
At the same time, the description leaves room for skepticism by asking whether it can really be the “magic bullet” Toyota suggests. That tension is part of what makes the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid interesting: it promises a rare blend of capability, versatility, and efficiency, but it also has to prove that those qualities come together in a way that matters to buyers.

Reviewed a 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid on Oct 4, 2022
I was between this car and the 2020 Kia niro. I’ve only been driving the RAV4 hybrid for a few days but I’m so in love. It drives so smoothly and is incredibly quiet. The space inside is more comfortable than the niro with better acceleration and power in general. I’m currently averaging about 36MPG. It’s awesome.

How much does the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,298 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,815.67 |
| Year-Round High | $19,373.43 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,663 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +3.59% |
Prices are up 3.59% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 269 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $16,815.67, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating and 7.5/10 expert rating point to a model that delivers on its core mission. Toyota positions it as a compact SUV that aims to be more efficient, more capable, and more versatile, and the expert review backs up that use-case framing by describing it as a mainstream hybrid crossover rather than a niche experiment.
The model scores 8/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
It also earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
With 23.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively rather than rushing into the first example you see.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Toyota’s hybrid setup is presented as a practical way to get efficiency without giving up everyday usefulness, and the expert review emphasizes that the RAV4 Hybrid keeps the familiar compact-SUV formula while adding hybrid capability. The powertrain description also points to a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder paired with three electric motors, which supports the idea that this is a mature, mainstream hybrid system rather than an experimental one.
Toyota also frames the model as a vehicle that can be more efficient, more capable, and more versatile, which is the kind of broad mission that usually matters to used buyers who want a dependable all-rounder. For long-term ownership, your main risk is buying a poorly maintained example or one with hidden prior damage, so condition and history matter more than the badge alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?
At 63.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the hybrid system, brakes, and electronics feel consistent during a test drive. Because this model is meant to blend efficiency with everyday usefulness, you want an example that still feels tight, clean, and well cared for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin is described as a blend of form and function, and the Limited adds a two-tone interior with extensive leatherette and soft-touch materials for a near-luxury feel. The XLE is the more basic choice, so you should expect fewer upscale touches there.
- Powertrain: The hybrid setup uses a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder with three electric motors for 194 net horsepower and electronic all-wheel drive. It is also rated at 34 mpg city, 31 highway, 33 combined, which is a major part of the appeal.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The rear-view camera is standard, while the bird’s-eye-view camera with proximity sensors is available.
- Infotainment: Both XLE and Limited trims feature a 6.1-inch touchscreen navigation system with Bluetooth, USB connectivity, and app access. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 34 mpg city, 31 highway, 33 combined, and real-world testing returned around 33 and 34 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is offered in 2 trim levels: XLE and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- XLE: This is the better-value choice if you want the hybrid drivetrain, the 6.1-inch touchscreen navigation system, and the core efficiency and capability story without paying for the more upscale cabin treatment. It also rides on smaller wheels with larger tires, which the review suggests may be more comfortable over bumps.
- Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the more premium interior, including the two-tone cabin with extensive leatherette and soft-touch materials. It suits you best if you care more about a near-luxury feel and are willing to pay more for it.
Toyota Safety Sense P includes pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?
This is a seller’s market, so you should act selectively and be ready to move when a strong listing appears.
- Deal availability: 23.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 269 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.59% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 63.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,815.67, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $18,298 sits slightly above last year's $17,663.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. The combination of hybrid efficiency, mainstream SUV usefulness, and a strong expert rating helps support buyer interest. If you keep the vehicle in clean condition and avoid examples with accident history, you should be in a better position to preserve value.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes pre-collision sensing and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto-dimming high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The model also comes with a full complement of front and side impact airbags, plus a rear-view camera; the bird’s-eye-view camera with proximity sensors is available.
The safety story is a strong one overall, especially because the suite covers several key active-safety functions that matter in daily driving. The main trim-level caveat is that the bird’s-eye-view camera is not standard, so you may need to step up or find the right package if that feature matters to you.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 23.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.59% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Toyota presents it as a compact SUV that aims to be more efficient, more capable, and more versatile.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a strong pick if you want the hybrid RAV4 formula and you find a clean example with solid history. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep shopping carefully and compare condition closely, because the market is still leaning toward sellers and the best examples are likely to move first.
