How much does the 2016 Toyota Prius cost?

Prices are up 2.95% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.

There are 740 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Toyota Prius earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.

The overview frames this Prius as a familiar hybrid formula that still carries the identity that made it a standout in the segment, while also aiming to push expectations. It is positioned as a fuel-saving daily driver with strong recognition, and the expert review backs that up with a solid mix of efficiency, technology, and practicality.

32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The overview presents the Prius as a model that has kept its core appeal intact while evolving into a new generation, which supports the idea of a proven formula rather than a risky reinvention. The expert review also emphasizes its staying power in the hybrid market and its ability to deliver the kind of efficiency buyers expect from a Prius.

The performance notes point to a 1.8-liter gas engine paired with two electric motor-generators, and the car is described as driving surprisingly well with decent pickup and good cornering. The cost-effectiveness notes also say the pricing is competitive enough to attract new owners, which helps reduce the sense that you are taking on an expensive ownership proposition.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the car has been maintained well enough to preserve the hybrid system’s efficiency and everyday drivability.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Prius?

At 53.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of bodywork, panel alignment, and any signs of prior repair. Because the listing pool includes a sizable share of accident-affected vehicles, condition matters as much as mileage and price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Two and Two Eco get a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while the Three, Three Touring, Four, and Four Touring upgrade to a 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, and more connected features. The base trim also misses the head-up display, which is only available on uprated trims.
• Powertrain: The Prius uses a 1.8-liter gas engine with two electric motor-generators for a net 121 horsepower. The Two uses a nickel-metal-hydride battery, while every other trim gets a more compact lithium-ion pack.
• Safety package: Every Prius comes with Toyota’s Star Safety System, including enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop Technology. The Four adds Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control, while the Four and Four Touring also add a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The Two and Two Eco come with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth voice activation, a reversing camera, USB 2.0 input, an aux audio jack, and Siri Eyes Free integration. Higher trims move to a 7-inch touchscreen and add the Entune app suite, navigation, HD predictive traffic, and Doppler weather overlay.
• Fuel efficiency: The Prius is estimated at 54 mpg city/50 highway/52 combined, and the Two Eco improves that to 58/53/56.

Which 2016 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Prius is offered in 6 trim levels: Two, Two Eco, Three, Three Touring, Four, Four Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Two: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Prius basics with the 6.1-inch touchscreen and core hybrid efficiency. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model.
• Two Eco: This is the best-value trim if fuel economy is your top priority, since it improves the efficiency estimates over the standard Two. It is the trim to focus on if you want maximum savings at the pump.
• Three: This is the first trim that steps up to the 7-inch touchscreen and adds navigation and more connected tech. It is the sweet spot if you want a more complete cabin without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• Three Touring: This trim adds the Touring treatment on top of the Three’s equipment, so it suits you if you want a more upscale-feeling version of the midrange setup.
• Four: This is the trim to target if you want the most advanced safety tech, including pre-collision braking support, lane departure alert, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. It is the best fit if safety features matter most.
• Four Touring: This is the top trim, combining the Four’s safety equipment with the Touring upgrade and the most premium positioning in the lineup. It is the right pick if you want the most fully equipped Prius here.

The Four and Four Touring are the trims that add the blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Prius?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop with some patience and be ready to move when a strong listing appears.

• Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 740 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.95% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 53.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,224, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Prius's resale value?

The current average of $15,238 sits slightly above last year's $14,801.

That upward move suggests the market has kept steady interest in this Prius, which can help support resale value if you buy well and maintain the car carefully. The year-round range also shows that pricing has stayed fairly tight, so condition and trim will matter when you eventually sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius safe?

The 2016 Toyota Prius earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Prius comes with Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock brake system with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop Technology. It also includes advanced front- and side-impact airbags as part of the standard safety suite.

The Four trim adds Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The Four and Four Touring also add a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, so safety equipment improves meaningfully as you move up the lineup.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.95% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert review highlights the Prius as the heart and soul of the hybrid market, with strong efficiency and a recognizable identity.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,584, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $15,238 average.
• It blends utility, comfort, and fuel economy in a practical package.

The bottom line: If you want the newer generation’s updated feel, stronger tech, and still-solid efficiency, the 2016 is the better all-around pick. If your main goal is to spend less up front and you value practicality above newer features, the 2015 is the smarter budget path.
