Overview

Scion’s 2016 tC once again confuses both the media and the public as to whether it’s a coupe or a hatchback. But this compact family-hauler continues to offer seating for 4, abundant features, and a staid-yet-competent 4-cylinder powerplant. The 2016 tC also sports a brand new Display Audio System boasting a 7-inch touchscreen, HD radio, Bluetooth audio streaming, and internet radio access by way of interfaced smartphone apps.
The tC once again comes in a single base trim, with standard front-wheel drive (FWD) only. The somewhat cramped, coupe-like cabin does manage to offer 14.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, and those seats fold down for a little extra (though unspecified) room. The tC's exterior keeps an aggressive and athletic profile that, according to most, doesn’t quite pan out on the open road. But for the more mundane chores and commutes, this deficient performance matters less than the tC's undeniable practicality and value, not to mention some heady acceleration figures--though the acceleration means somewhat lower fuel efficiency.
Again powering the tC is a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) powerplant mated with either a standard 6-speed manual transmission or an available 6-speed shiftable automatic, both good for 179 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. Expect an estimated 23 mpg city/31 highway/26 combined from the I4 with either transmission. One track test had a stick-shift-toting 2015 tC going from 0-60 in a fairly quick 7.3 seconds
Standard appearance features aboard the 2016 tC include 18-inch alloy wheels, a power-opening sunroof in front, and a fixed glass sunroof in the rear. Inside, look for cloth upholstery, sport front seats, reclining rear seats, and full power accessories. Cruise control and telescoping tilt-wheel steering are again included, along with a simulated alloy steering wheel mounted with standard paddle shifters, cruise controls, and audio buttons, manual air conditioning, and standard Bluetooth hands-free calling. Entertainment now centers around the new Display Audio System, including a Pioneer premium audio system that features a CD/MP3 player, 8 speakers, HD radio, and an auxiliary audio input.
A number of dealer-installed accessories also remain available to the 2016 tC, including BeSpoke entertainment with navigation and Aha capability with a dedicated smartphone app. Look too for optional 19-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, and sport-oriented TRD (Toyota Racing Division) brakes and suspension parts.
The tC also returns equipped with such standard safety features as 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front side-mounted airbags, front knee airbags, front and rear head-protection airbags, active front headrests, and turn-signal-integrated mirrors. Front fog/driving lights return as an option, though no rear-view camera is yet available. National Highway Transportation Safety Administration tests give the 2016 tC 5 out of 5 stars for overall crashworthiness, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awards the tC its highest rating of Good in all categories except its new small-overlap frontal-offset test, where the tC gets a second-best Acceptable score.
Scion, a division of Toyota, has its 2016 tC in dealer showrooms right now, challenging Honda’s Civic Coupe, Kia’s Forte Koup, and Volkswagen’s Beetle Coupe for a share of the compact hatchback/coupe market.

We officially bought the car 2 days ago. The car will be primarily driven by my 16 year old son who is in absolute heaven. The car safety rating is very good and has the excellent reputation of Toyota backing it which makes his parents happy. The car has relatively low miles, only minor body imperfections, and came with some amazing upgrades such as an Airlift, bonus headlight package, remote starter. So far we are very pleased with the cars features. The A/C is VERY cold on these hot days. Works perfectly. I wish it had a backup camera for safety reasons but being a 2016 it does not have one. My husband owned a Toyota Celica in high school and says the Scion TC reminds him of that car. We hope it will be as reliable as the reviews indicate it could be.

Great car with the exception of discontinued cd layer for those still choose to have one. All else is the same from 2014 with slight differences in headlights and fog lights and tail lights. Still a beautiful car to drive

Great beginner car, simple to work on/ maintain, and great value for the money. The car features reflect the price. Missing a temp gauge on all Tc’s, does have a light on the dashboard that advises you when the car is warmed up but a temp gauge would still be great. The car is also missing a back up camera if you decide on choosing the RS model. Overall, great value and reliability for the price. May I add it’s also made in Japan!!!

CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2016 Scion tC prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsIs the 2016 Scion tC a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Scion tC earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. With 27.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example. That combination makes it a solid used-car option if you want to shop selectively and compare condition carefully.
Is the 2016 Scion tC reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. That kind of feedback suggests the ownership experience has been positive for many drivers, especially when the car has been maintained well and has a clean history. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is ending up with a neglected or previously damaged example, so condition and records matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Scion tC?
At 32.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important. You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can catch signs of past damage, poor repairs, or wear that may not show up in photos. Focus on overall condition first, especially bodywork consistency, panel alignment, and evidence of careful maintenance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Scion tC?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 74 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 32.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,697.92, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Should I buy a 2016 Scion tC or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 32.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want this model year, the 2016 is a reasonable place to start because owner satisfaction is strong and there are still some good deals in the market. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep comparing listings across nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-documented car rather than chasing the lowest sticker price.
