FAQs
From the rear it looks like other compact crossovers, until you get to the double dual exhaust pipes. That’s the first clue this isn’t just another SUV. A look at the profile offers some more clues—muscular haunches and sporty styling lines that imply speed. And once you see the massive front-end vents and realize they’re designed like that to take in enough air to cool something special beneath the hood, you understand the 2016 Porsche Macan is no ordinary crossover.
The Macan’s dynamic performance lives up to the Porsche badge and blows away its luxury compact crossover competition. The focus on aggressive performance doesn’t detract from its ride quality, which is quiet and comfortable. The Macan’s interior is luxurious and logical and can be customized with a litany of options. The only drawback is a smaller rear seat and cargo area (17.7 cubic feet) than some of its rivals, but that’s fairly easy to overlook, as the rest of the Macan shines bright.
There are only minor updates for the 2016 version of the Macan, which is built on an Audi Q5 base but really looks nothing like it. Tri-zone climate control now comes standard on all Macans, a heated steering wheel is newly standard on the Macan Turbo, and a 360-degree camera is now available.
There are two trims for this spirited luxury crossover—the Macan S and Macan Turbo. The Macan S has a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that produces 340 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque. The Macan Turbo is powered by a 3.6-liter turbocharged V6 that generates 400 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Both vehicles come with a 7-speed automated transmission and all-wheel drive, and each gets 17 mpg city/23 highway/19 combined. And the Macan can tow up to 4,409 pounds when properly equipped.
The Macan Turbo and its 400 horses is, obviously, the quicker of the two and can get from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds, a good time for a sports car, never mind an SUV. But the Macan S (0-60 in 5.6) is plenty quick enough. Both trims corner with grace, although the steering is a little soft… but only by Porsche standards. It’s more than adequate when compared with other crossovers.
Standard features for the Macan S include privacy glass, a power liftgate, automatic bi-xenon headlights with cleaners and auto-leveling, fog lights, LED running lights, cruise control, the new tri-zone automatic climate control, 8-way power front seats with memory, leather, and simulated suede upholstery, 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats, Bluetooth, a 7-inch touchscreen, and an 11-speaker audio system.
Moving up to the Macan Turbo adds larger brakes (discs are 10mm bigger in the front and 26mm bigger in the rear), adaptive suspension dampers, adaptive headlights, LED foglights, unique front and rear fascias, full leather upholstery, heated 10-way power front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 14-speaker Bose Surround Sound audio system, and navigation.
If there’s something you want that’s not on the list of standard features, don’t worry, chances are very good Porsche will offer it as an option. It won’t be cheap, but it will probably be available.
Standard safety features for both Macan trims include traction management, automatic brake differential, anti-slip regulation, antilock brakes, brake-pad wear indicators, electronic parking brake, tire pressure monitor, tire sealing compound and electric compressor, roll over sensor, and the full complement of airbags.
