CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Nissan Pathfinder
overall

Summary
With 824 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,390.00, 25.0% of 2016 Nissan Pathfinders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
55.7% of 2016 Pathfinder models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Nissan Pathfinder is a family-sized crossover SUV that aims to be practical first. Nissan’s own test-drive summary says it gets many things right, but also many things wrong, which leaves it functional rather than especially memorable. That makes it a straightforward choice for buyers who want a crossover that focuses on everyday usefulness instead of standing out with a more distinctive personality.
What helps the 2016 Pathfinder is the sense of space and comfort it offers. Owner feedback highlights a spacious interior, smooth driving experience, and strong cargo capacity, with the third row of seats adding to its family appeal. At the same time, some shoppers may find the lack of a digital speed readout and the absence of certain features such as a sunroof disappointing, and visibility concerns tied to the windshield design may also matter to some buyers.

Have had great luck with our previous pathfinder. Only concern is the windshield might have a bigger blind spot because of the curve of the windshield and this SV model doesn't have blind spot indicators on the mirror.

Great vehicle so far, no issues. I like the extra room over the Traverse and Acadia. It has more room in the cargo area than the Journey for sure, with the third row seat opened. I like the comfort and the driveability, it just seems smoother and more responsive. I like the power it has. So far a very nice vehicle. The steering wheel control layout makes sense and is easy to access. The navigation on the GM vehicles is a little easier to navigat through, but it may just take a little extra time to learn the Nissan layout. We were familiar with the GM system already. One small complaint, it does not have the digital speed readout. My wife got used to that on her Equinox. I liked it also, but the Pathfinder doesnt have it. Plenty of room to put it in there, but it doesnt have that feature.

I test drove the platinum edition that was fully loaded except for it was lacking a Sun roof which was a deal breaker unfortunately. I did enjoy the plush interior and ride quality. We compared this model to GMC Acadia, Dodge Durango, Acura MDX, Chevrolet Traverse, and Ford Explorers. We ended up going with the Acura MDX. Now that is refinement.

The expert drive notes describe the 3.5-liter V6 as dependable and powerful, which reinforces the sense that the core drivetrain is built for steady ownership. The cost-effectiveness commentary also points to favorable crash-test ratings and decent fuel economy as ownership positives.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that condition and maintenance history matter more than the basic formula itself, especially if you want a trouble-free example.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Nissan Pathfinder?
At 54.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then focus your inspection on signs of prior damage, uneven wear, and any evidence that repairs were not completed cleanly. Because the Pathfinder is a family hauler, it also makes sense to pay close attention to interior condition, seat wear, and how well the cargo area has held up.
If possible, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can confirm that the vehicle’s structure, electronics, and safety systems are in good shape before you commit.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The basic S trim level is the entry point, while SV, SL, and Platinum add equipment and refinement. The SL also gets Tech and Premium sub-trim designations, and the Platinum is the most fully equipped choice.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.5-liter V6 with 260 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4WD is available if you want extra capability.
- Safety package: The Pathfinder includes a reversing camera with rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, a 360-degree top-down monitor, and Easy Fill Tire Alert. It does not offer drowsy-driver detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning, or automatic emergency braking.
- Infotainment: The system does not offer smartphone projection, natural voice recognition, NissanConnect with Mobile Apps, text messaging support, Wi-Fi, or connected emergency services. The Family Entertainment Package adds dual viewing screens, wireless headphones, a remote, a 3-prong electrical outlet, and video-game hookups.
- Fuel efficiency: The test loop returned 20.2 mpg, just short of the EPA’s estimate of 21 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2016 Nissan Pathfinder trim should I buy?
The 2016 Nissan Pathfinder is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SL, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value entry point if you want the Pathfinder’s core space and utility at the lowest starting price. It gives you the basic family-hauling formula, but you should expect the fewest convenience and luxury features.
- SV: This is the trim to target if you want a better balance of equipment and price. It should make the Pathfinder feel more complete without pushing you all the way to the top of the range.
- SL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more upscale feel, and the SL can be further distinguished with Tech and Premium sub-trim designations. If you want a nicer daily driver without paying Platinum money, this is the one to focus on.
- Platinum: Choose this if you want the most fully equipped Pathfinder and are willing to pay for it. It is the top-end choice for shoppers who care most about comfort and available extras.
The safety content also notes that the Pathfinder cannot be equipped with forward-collision warning or automatic emergency braking, so you should not expect those features on any trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Nissan Pathfinder?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right example.
- Deal availability: 24.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 816 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.72% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,441.62, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder's resale value?
The current average of $9,543 sits slightly below last year's $10,934.
That kind of price movement suggests the Pathfinder has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you shop carefully now, you may have less downside left than a buyer who paid closer to last year’s average.
Strong owner satisfaction can also help support demand when it’s time to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder safe?
The Pathfinder loses its Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety this year, and it earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
You do get a reversing camera with rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, a 360-degree top-down monitor, and Easy Fill Tire Alert. Those features help with low-speed awareness and everyday maneuvering.
The tradeoff is that the Pathfinder does not offer drowsy-driver detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning, or automatic emergency braking. That missing active-safety hardware is the main caveat to keep in mind.
Should I buy a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 24.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.72% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It offers a practical, space-first family-hauler setup with a strong V6 and useful cargo room.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $11,185, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $9,543 average.
- It adds a broader family-hauler appeal with more interior space and all-wheel-drive capability.
The bottom line: If you want the lower purchase price and are comfortable shopping carefully for condition, the 2016 is the smarter path. If you can spend more for a newer example and want the next year’s broader appeal, the 2017 is the better secondary option.
