Summary
With 44 currently listed for sale and an average price of $6,000, 22.7% of 2016 Nissan Pathfinder listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Nissan Pathfinder is a family-sized crossover SUV that aims to cover the basics well, and it does get many things right. Its appeal starts with a spacious interior and a smooth driving experience, which make it easy to live with as a daily family vehicle. Owners also tend to value its comfort, power, and cargo space, especially when the third row of seats is in use.
At the same time, the Pathfinder is not especially memorable. The overall impression is of a functional SUV that can satisfy practical needs without standing out much from the crowd. Some shoppers may also find the lack of a digital speed readout and the absence of certain features, such as a sunroof, disappointing, and visibility concerns tied to the windshield design may be worth noting.

Have had great luck with our previous pathfinder. Only concern is the windshield might have a bigger blind spot because of the curve of the windshield and this SV model doesn't have blind spot indicators on the mirror.

Great vehicle so far, no issues. I like the extra room over the Traverse and Acadia. It has more room in the cargo area than the Journey for sure, with the third row seat opened. I like the comfort and the driveability, it just seems smoother and more responsive. I like the power it has. So far a very nice vehicle. The steering wheel control layout makes sense and is easy to access. The navigation on the GM vehicles is a little easier to navigat through, but it may just take a little extra time to learn the Nissan layout. We were familiar with the GM system already. One small complaint, it does not have the digital speed readout. My wife got used to that on her Equinox. I liked it also, but the Pathfinder doesnt have it. Plenty of room to put it in there, but it doesnt have that feature.

I test drove the platinum edition that was fully loaded except for it was lacking a Sun roof which was a deal breaker unfortunately. I did enjoy the plush interior and ride quality. We compared this model to GMC Acadia, Dodge Durango, Acura MDX, Chevrolet Traverse, and Ford Explorers. We ended up going with the Acura MDX. Now that is refinement.

How much does the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,257 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,257 |
| Year-Round High | $10,517 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,527 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −12.07% |
Prices have softened 12.07% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 766 listings available, which gives you a decent pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, smooth driving experience, comfort, power, and cargo space, especially when you need the third row. The Pathfinder also fits well if you want a family-sized crossover SUV that handles daily use without much fuss.
That said, the overall impression is still of a functional SUV rather than a standout one, so it makes the most sense if you value practicality, room, and easy livability over personality. Good and great deals account for 29.4% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free feel, with repeated praise for comfort, space, and the kind of everyday usability you can count on. The expert evaluation describes the 3.5-liter V6 as dependable and powerful, which supports the Pathfinder’s reputation for steady day-to-day operation.
The cost-effectiveness notes also mention favorable crash-test ratings and a decent ownership proposition when you need a practical family hauler. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a vehicle with this much age and mileage can hide wear items, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Nissan Pathfinder?
At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the vehicle has been maintained consistently, since accident history can affect both reliability and resale value.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The basic S trim level is the entry point, while the SV, SL, and Platinum add more equipment. The SL also gets Tech and Premium sub-trim designations, and the base setup is the most stripped-down version, so feature gaps matter if you want a richer cabin.
- Powertrain: You get a single 3.5-liter V6 with 260 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT. Front-wheel drive is standard, 4WD is optional, and the setup is described as dependable and powerful.
- Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes a reversing camera with rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, a 360-degree top-down monitor, and Easy Fill Tire Alert. It does not offer drowsy-driver detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning, or automatic emergency braking.
- Infotainment: The Pathfinder does not offer smartphone projection, natural voice recognition, or NissanConnect app services. It also lacks Wi-Fi connectivity and connected emergency or roadside features, so the tech suite is dated.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert drive loop returned 20.2 mpg, and the evaluation notes that this is just short of the EPA’s estimate of 21 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2016 Nissan Pathfinder trim should I buy?
The 2016 Nissan Pathfinder is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SL, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the least expensive way into the Pathfinder, and it makes sense if you mainly want the roomy three-row layout at the lowest price. It is the trim most likely to feel bare-bones, so it suits you best if value matters more than features.
- SV: This is the smart middle-ground choice if you want a better-equipped Pathfinder without jumping too far up the price ladder. It should be the best-value trim for many shoppers because it balances equipment and cost.
- SL: This trim adds a more upscale feel, and the leather-lined version can be further distinguished with Tech and Premium sub-trim designations. It suits you if you want a nicer cabin and more features without going all the way to the top.
- Platinum: This is the most fully equipped Pathfinder, and it is the right pick if you want the most comfort and available equipment the model offers. It makes the most sense if you plan to keep the SUV for family duty and want the richest setup.
The safety content notes that the Pathfinder loses its Top Safety Pick designation because it cannot be equipped with forward-collision warning or automatic emergency braking.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Nissan Pathfinder?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 766 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.07% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,257, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder's resale value?
The current average of $9,257 sits slightly below last year's $10,527.
That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to sell later, the softer current pricing means your upside may be limited unless you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder safe?
The 2016 Nissan Pathfinder earns a Top Safety Pick designation from IIHS and a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes a reversing camera with rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, a 360-degree top-down monitor, and Easy Fill Tire Alert. The main caveat is that it cannot be equipped with forward-collision warning or automatic emergency braking, and it also lacks drowsy-driver detection plus lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist.
Should I buy a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.07% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 stands out for its spacious interior and smooth, family-friendly driving character.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,633, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $9,257 average.
- It adds a broader family-hauler appeal with more of a bridge between minivan practicality and all-wheel-drive versatility.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2016 is the more appealing buy because prices are softer and inventory is available. If you can spend more for a newer model year, the 2017 is the better secondary path for shoppers who want to compare against a slightly pricier alternative.
