overall

Summary
With 530 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,583, 31.7% of 2016 Mazda MAZDA6s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.
46.0% of 2016 MAZDA6 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 stands out first for its styling. It is described as sleek, svelte, and sexy, which is unusual praise for a mainstream sedan and helps explain why it feels more distinctive than many cars in its class. It also aims to deliver a more upscale experience than its price suggests, with the summary noting that it is priced like a mainstream model but styled and equipped like a luxury car.
Beyond appearance, the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 is presented as a well-rounded midsize sedan with fuel efficiency, safety, and technology among its strengths. The summary calls it a remarkable automobile, and owner feedback reinforces that appeal by pointing to its smooth ride, enjoyable handling, and strong fuel economy. The main tradeoff is space: the summary says its interior accommodations are smaller than some competitors, and some drivers also felt the engine could use more power and that certain comforts, such as power seats, were missing.

I needed a reliable car. Had a Mazda 3 that was very dependable, unfortunately had an accident and it was totaled, so had to get a replacement and why not get another Mazda. Thought this car was priced fair, had a good car fax / maintenance and it was a little bigger than the Mazda 3 we had previously. We also looked at Camry, CX-5. Also looked at another Mazda 3 but it was too small for our family. The Mazda 6 2016 we purchased is fun to drive. I would have liked to got something a little newer or something that had a little more room but really wasn’t too much of an option for us as it exceeded our budget. The mileage was low for this vehicle so hoping to keep this vehicle around for a long time and maybe we can pass it down to one of our kids someday.

Great car with great features. The only thing missing in my eyes are power seaats, hate the old school method. Lol. As far as value goes for this car yes could have been a bit better.

Yes — the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 earns a 4.7/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Technology and Safety.
Drivers consistently praise its smooth ride, stylish design, enjoyable handling, and fuel efficiency. The overview also points to a more upscale feel than its price suggests, which makes it appealing if you want a midsize sedan that feels more distinctive than the usual commuter choice.
The current market also shows 32.1% good or great deals, so there are still some attractive listings if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with praise for its smooth ride, enjoyable handling, and fuel efficiency. The cost-effectiveness commentary also describes it as expected to be dependable over time and inexpensive to own.
The expert review reinforces that view by calling it thrifty with fuel and predicted to be inexpensive to own. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the car was maintained well, since condition and upkeep will matter more than the model’s overall reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA6?
At 46.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Pay close attention to bodywork, alignment, and signs of uneven wear, since those can reveal whether a past incident was repaired properly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Grand Touring stands out for its upscale presentation and the Technology Package, while the Touring and Grand Touring trims add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert; the base trim misses some of those features.
- Powertrain: A 184-hp, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard, paired with a 6-speed automatic in Grand Touring, while Sport and Touring versions can be had with a 6-speed manual. The car is tuned for strong fuel economy, and the review notes that more power would be welcome for some drivers.
- Safety package: The Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on Touring and Grand Touring trims.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a display mounted within the driver’s reach, touch input at a standstill, voice commands, and a Commander knob interface. It also includes E911, text-messaging support, Aha and Pandora integration, and available navigation with 2D and 3D map rendering.
- Fuel efficiency: The review cites 29.3 mpg during testing and says the EPA estimates 28 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined.
Which 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 trim should I buy?
The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point if you want the Mazda6’s styling and driving character at the lowest cost, and it can be a smart pick if you do not need the extra convenience and safety equipment found higher up.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, making it a stronger everyday choice without jumping all the way to the top trim.
- Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the most upscale version, with the strongest feature content and the available Technology Package that adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control, and Smart Brake Support.
The safety-package note is simple: Touring and Grand Touring get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert standard, while the Technology Package adds the rest of the advanced driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA6?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop with patience and compare listings closely.
- Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 524 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 5.62% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 46.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,095, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6's resale value?
The current average of $12,574 sits slightly above last year's $11,905.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. A stronger current price can help support resale value, especially when demand remains steady and inventory is not overly abundant.
The car’s appeal also helps: buyers tend to respond well to its styling, fuel economy, and upscale feel. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 safe?
The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA and is a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The available Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on Touring and Grand Touring trims, and E911 is built into Mazda Connect.
One caveat is that the advanced safety features are not universal across the lineup, so you should confirm exactly which trim and package a used listing has before you buy.
Should I buy a 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 46.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 5.62% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 brings a more advanced infotainment and safety setup, including Mazda Connect and available driver-assistance tech.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,309, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $12,574 average.
- It offers a sleek, upscale look with engaging driving dynamics at a lower price.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2016 is the better pick because it combines style, tech, safety, and owner satisfaction. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the better value play and still delivers much of the Mazda6’s core appeal.
