What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA6?

At 43% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision or shows uneven wear. Focus on body condition, tire wear, brake feel, and whether the electronics and driver-assistance features work as expected. Because the cabin is noted as smaller than some competitors, it’s also worth checking whether the interior space and comfort level fit your needs.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Touring and Grand Touring trims add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while the Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. If you’re shopping a lower trim, make sure you’re comfortable giving up those features.
• Powertrain: The car uses a 184-hp, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, and it’s the only engine offered. The manual transmission is available in Sport and Touring versions, while the Grand Touring uses a 6-speed automatic.
• Safety package: The available Technology Package includes lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on Touring and Grand Touring trims.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a display screen mounted within reach at the top of the dashboard, with touch input at a standstill, voice commands, and a Commander knob interface. It also includes E911, text-messaging support, Aha and Pandora, and available navigation with 2D and 3D map rendering.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert review says the car averaged 29.3 mpg during testing, and the EPA figures cited are 28 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined.

Which 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, and it’s the trim to consider if you want the Mazda6’s styling and driving character at the lowest price. It also offers the manual transmission, which makes it the best fit if you want the most engaging setup.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim if you want a stronger mix of equipment and safety. It adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and it keeps the manual-transmission option.
• Grand Touring: This is the most upscale version, with the 6-speed automatic and the most premium presentation in the review. It’s the right pick if you want the fullest feature set and don’t mind paying more.

The safety-package trim note is important here: blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on Touring and Grand Touring, while the Technology Package adds the more advanced driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA6?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop carefully and be ready to move when you find a strong listing.

• Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 549 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 6.13% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 43.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,082, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6's resale value?

The current average of $12,406 sits slightly above last year's $11,689.

That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. A stronger price trend can help support resale value, especially when demand stays steady and inventory remains manageable. The car’s appeal as a stylish, fuel-efficient midsize sedan also helps keep it relevant with used buyers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 safe?

The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety calls it a Top Safety Pick.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The available Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on Touring and Grand Touring trims, so lower trims may leave you without some of the more useful driver-assistance features. The review also notes that the radar cruise control works well, though Mazda could refine its engagement for smoother operation.

Should I buy a 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 43% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 6.13% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 stands out for being fuel-efficient, safe, and technologically advanced while still feeling upscale.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,241, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $12,406 average.
• It combines sharp styling with an upscale look and enjoyable driving manners.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2016 is the better target because it blends style, tech, safety, and owner satisfaction. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers much of the Mazda6 appeal.

How does the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 compare to the 2016 Honda Accord?

Our experts score the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 8.7/10 and the 2016 Honda Accord 6.8/10. The Mazda comes across as the more stylish and better-equipped choice, while the Accord counters with slightly stronger fuel economy and a larger used-market footprint. If you want the more engaging and upscale-feeling sedan, the Mazda is the better fit; if you want broader availability and a more conventional midsize-sedan formula, the Accord is worth a look.
