CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Mazda MAZDA6
overall

Summary
With 509 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,385.00, 30.8% of 2016 Mazda MAZDA6s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.
47.9% of 2016 MAZDA6 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 stands out first for its style. It is described as sleek, svelte, and sexy, a rare set of adjectives for a mainstream sedan, and that design-forward character is a big part of its appeal. It also aims to deliver a more upscale feel than its price suggests, with the summary noting that it is priced like a mainstream model but styled and equipped like a luxury car.
Beyond appearance, the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 is presented as a well-rounded midsize sedan with fuel efficiency, safety, and technology among its strengths. The summary calls it a remarkable automobile, and owner feedback reinforces that impression by praising its smooth ride, enjoyable handling, features, and fuel efficiency. The main tradeoffs are also clear: its interior accommodations are smaller than some competitors, deals are not particularly favorable, engine power could be better, and some comforts such as power seats are missing.

I needed a reliable car. Had a Mazda 3 that was very dependable, unfortunately had an accident and it was totaled, so had to get a replacement and why not get another Mazda. Thought this car was priced fair, had a good car fax / maintenance and it was a little bigger than the Mazda 3 we had previously. We also looked at Camry, CX-5. Also looked at another Mazda 3 but it was too small for our family. The Mazda 6 2016 we purchased is fun to drive. I would have liked to got something a little newer or something that had a little more room but really wasn’t too much of an option for us as it exceeded our budget. The mileage was low for this vehicle so hoping to keep this vehicle around for a long time and maybe we can pass it down to one of our kids someday.

Great car with great features. The only thing missing in my eyes are power seaats, hate the old school method. Lol. As far as value goes for this car yes could have been a bit better.

Mazdas ride so smooth and look so good. Love all of the amenities it comes with too; leather heated seats, sports mode, sky active feature. Very comfortable ride.

Yes — the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 earns a 4.7/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Technology and Safety.
Drivers consistently praise its smooth ride, stylish design, and enjoyable handling, and they also like its features and fuel efficiency. The overview frames it as a midsize sedan that aims for a more upscale feel than its price suggests, which fits the way it blends everyday practicality with a more premium presentation.
For you, that means this is a strong fit if you want a sedan that feels more special than the average commuter car without giving up efficiency or usability. The market still shows 29.7% good or great deals, so there are at least some attractive listings if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 reliable?

The expert evaluation adds that it is thrifty with fuel and predicted to be inexpensive to own, which supports the idea that it should be manageable as a used purchase. For you, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the car’s basic durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by age or heavy use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA6?
At 49.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven wear. Focus on condition details that matter most in a used sedan: interior wear, electronics, braking feel, and whether the car has been maintained consistently.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Touring and Grand Touring trims add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while the Grand Touring test car also had the optional Technology Package. The base trim is the one most likely to leave you without some of those features.
- Powertrain: The car uses a 184-hp, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, and the Grand Touring gets a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Sport and Touring versions can be had with a 6-speed manual if you want more involvement.
- Safety package: The Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on the Touring and Grand Touring trims.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a top-of-dash display, a Commander knob, voice commands, and touch input when stopped. It also includes text-messaging support, Aha and Pandora apps, and available navigation with 2D and 3D map rendering.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert review reports 29.3 mpg during testing and cites EPA estimates of 28 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined.
Which 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 trim should I buy?
The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point if you want the Mazda6’s core style and driving character at the lowest rung. It is also one of the trims that can be paired with the 6-speed manual, which makes it the best fit if you value a more hands-on driving experience.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and it can also be had with the manual transmission. If you want a better balance of equipment and price, this is the trim to focus on first.
- Grand Touring: This is the most upscale version in the data, with the 6-speed automatic and the available Technology Package that adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control, and Smart Brake Support. Choose this if you want the most advanced safety and convenience content.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the Touring and Grand Touring trims, while the Technology Package adds the more advanced driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA6?
Act selectively: this is a seller’s market, so you should be ready to move when a strong listing appears.
- Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 535 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.75% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 49.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,097.30, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6's resale value?
The current average of $12,415 sits slightly above last year's $12,082.
That upward move suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year, which can help support resale if you buy carefully. If you choose a clean, well-kept example, you may be better positioned to preserve value than if you buy a higher-mileage or accident-history car.
The fact that prices are still above last year’s level also tells you demand has not softened much. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 safe?
It earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on the Touring and Grand Touring trims, so those trims give you more built-in protection even before optional equipment.
For used-car shopping, that means you should pay close attention to whether a car has the safety package you want, since not every example will be equipped the same way. The good news is that the core safety reputation is strong, but you still want to verify the exact feature set on the specific car you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 49.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.75% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines upscale styling with strong technology and safety.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,568, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $12,415 average.
- It blends sleek design and an upscale appearance with delightful driving dynamics.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2016 is the better target because it brings standout tech, safety, and broad owner approval. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 is the value play, especially if you find one in clean condition and can live with fewer features.
