Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 reliable?

The user feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with praise for its smooth ride, enjoyable handling, and fuel efficiency. The cost-effectiveness notes also describe it as expected to be dependable over time and inexpensive to own, which supports the case for long-term confidence.

The main ownership risk for used buyers is making sure the car was maintained well, since some drivers wanted more engine power and a few comfort features were missing.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA6?

At 45.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because the model’s appeal is tied to its styling, handling, and technology, condition matters a lot: you want the car to feel tight, clean, and well-kept rather than merely presentable. It also makes sense to confirm that the safety and infotainment features work as expected, since those are major parts of the car’s value proposition.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Touring and Grand Touring trims add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while the optional Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support. If you want the most complete safety equipment, avoid a lower-spec car without those features.
• Powertrain: The standard 184-hp, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder is the only engine offered, paired with a 6-speed automatic in Grand Touring. Sport and Touring versions can be had with a 6-speed manual, and the car is tuned for responsive, engaging driving with strong fuel economy.
• Safety package: The Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on Touring and Grand Touring trims.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect brings a touch-sensitive display at the top of the dashboard, a Commander knob interface, voice commands, text-messaging support, Aha and Pandora integration, navigation with 2D and 3D maps, and available Bose audio. The system is touch-sensitive only when the car is stopped.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA says it should return 28 mpg in the city, 40 on the highway, and 32 combined. The expert review also recorded 29.3 mpg during a week of driving.

Which 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point if you want the Mazda6’s styling and driving character at the lowest price. It can be a smart choice if you’re focused on value and are willing to give up some of the richer equipment found higher up.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, which meaningfully improves everyday safety and convenience.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the most upscale version of the car, including the standard 6-speed automatic and the most premium-feeling setup described in the review.

The safety package note is important here: the Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support, while blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on Touring and Grand Touring.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA6?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop carefully and be ready to move when you find a strong listing.

• Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 520 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 5.29% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 45.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,095, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6's resale value?

The current average of $12,525 sits slightly above last year's $11,895.

That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. The price trend also shows that demand has held up well enough to support values rather than push them down. Because the car combines style, efficiency, and strong owner satisfaction, it has the kind of appeal that can help it stay desirable in the used market.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 safe?

The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA and is named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The available safety tech is a major strength. The Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on Touring and Grand Touring trims, so lower trims may leave you without some of the most useful driver-assistance features.

Should I buy a 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 45.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 5.29% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert summary says it is priced like a mainstream model but styled and equipped like a luxury car.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,281, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $12,525 average.
• It offers a sleek, upscale look and a practical, fuel-efficient package.

The 2016 is the better pick if you want the stronger all-around package and are comfortable paying a bit more for it. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly alternative and still delivers much of the same style-driven appeal.
