Why it stands out
The 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 stands out for bringing a sleek, svelte, and sexy look to the mainstream midsize sedan class. It is presented as a car that feels priced like a mainstream model but styled and equipped like a luxury car, which gives it a more upscale personality than many shoppers expect in this segment.
It also has a strong practical appeal thanks to its fuel efficiency, safety, and technology. At the same time, it is not without compromises: the interior is smaller than some competitors, and the available deals are described as not particularly favorable. Owner feedback generally reinforces the car’s appeal, with praise for its smooth ride, stylish design, enjoyable handling, and good fuel economy, while some drivers wished for more engine power and noted that certain comforts, such as power seats, were missing.

I needed a reliable car. Had a Mazda 3 that was very dependable, unfortunately had an accident and it was totaled, so had to get a replacement and why not get another Mazda. Thought this car was priced fair, had a good car fax / maintenance and it was a little bigger than the Mazda 3 we had previously. We also looked at Camry, CX-5. Also looked at another Mazda 3 but it was too small for our family. The Mazda 6 2016 we purchased is fun to drive. I would have liked to got something a little newer or something that had a little more room but really wasn’t too much of an option for us as it exceeded our budget. The mileage was low for this vehicle so hoping to keep this vehicle around for a long time and maybe we can pass it down to one of our kids someday.

Great car with great features. The only thing missing in my eyes are power seaats, hate the old school method. Lol. As far as value goes for this car yes could have been a bit better.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA6?
At 46.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any accident history or incomplete service records. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s safety and driver-assistance features work as intended. Because the model’s appeal depends heavily on its upscale feel, you should also pay close attention to interior wear and missing comfort features.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Grand Touring stands out for its upscale presentation, and the Technology Package adds useful safety tech; base-trim shoppers should watch for feature gaps.
- Powertrain: A 184-hp, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard, paired with a 6-speed automatic in Grand Touring, while Sport and Touring versions can be had with a 6-speed manual.
- Safety package: The Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control with forward-collision warning, and Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking; blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on Touring and Grand Touring.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a central display with touch capability at a standstill, voice commands, and a Commander knob interface; it also includes E911, text messaging support, and app integration.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert review cites 29.3 mpg during testing, and the EPA figures mentioned are 28 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined.

- Sport: This is the entry point if you want the Mazda6’s styling and driving character at the lowest rung, and it can be the right pick if you plan to keep things simple.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert while staying below the top trim.
- Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the most upscale feel and the most complete equipment set, especially when paired with the Technology Package.
The safety-package note is important: Touring and Grand Touring get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while the Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, radar cruise control, and Smart Brake Support.

Should I buy a 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 46.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 4.27% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 adds a more advanced infotainment and safety setup than the prior year.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,135, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $12,309 average.
- It blends sharp styling with engaging driving dynamics.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger tech-and-safety package and are comfortable paying a bit more, the 2016 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2015 remains a smart alternative with much of the same appeal.
