What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Mazda MAZDA3?

At 51.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage car or one with a lower price than the rest of the market. Pay close attention to signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, and any wear that suggests the car has had a harder life than average. Because equipment varies by trim, it also helps to confirm the exact features on the car you’re looking at.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sport trim is the most basic version, while Touring and Grand Touring add more equipment and a more upscale feel. Base-trim cars can be missing some of the convenience and safety features that matter most to you, so check the exact option content carefully.
• Powertrain: You can choose a 155-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder or a 184-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder. The smaller engine is the efficiency-minded choice, while the larger one gives you stronger acceleration.
• Safety package: Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on Touring and Grand Touring, and optional on Sport. The Technology Package adds dynamic cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive HID headlights with automatic high-beam operation, and lane-departure warning.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect is standard and includes Bluetooth music streaming, HD Radio, satellite radio, Internet radio, social media access, text-message delivery and reply, and two USB ports. The system does not keep touchscreen touch control active while driving.
• Fuel efficiency: One test of the 2.0-liter manual returned 28.5 mpg, below its 33 combined estimate, while the 2.5-liter automatic returned 26.7 mpg, below its 32 combined estimate.

Which 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Mazda3 experience at the lowest price. It’s the trim to consider if you want the car’s driving character and value without paying for extras you may not need.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday convenience and includes blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert as standard. If you want a more complete used-car package without stretching to the top trim, this is the one to focus on.
• Grand Touring: This is the most upscale version, with the richest feature content and access to the Technology Package on automatic models. Choose it if you want the most comfort and safety tech the Mazda3 offers.

For safety equipment, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on Touring and Grand Touring, and optional on Sport.

Should I buy a 2016 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 51.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 6.26% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 keeps the Mazda3’s engaging driving feel while offering strong safety and tech.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,087, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $12,125 average.
• It emphasizes refinement, practicality, and strong all-around value.

Consider the 2017 if:

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, driving enjoyment, and safety, the 2016 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 is the value play; if you want the newer refresh and can spend more, the 2017 is the upgrade path.
