CarGurus Analysis: 2016 MINI Cooper

Summary
With 517 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,358.00, 33.1% of 2016 MINI Coopers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 MINI Cooper 4.67 / 5 stars.
60.7% of 2016 MINI Cooper models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 MINI Cooper stands out because it blends retro style with a genuinely playful driving character. MINI’s small size, short wheelbase, and low weight are a big part of the appeal, and the brand’s go-kart-like handling gives the car a lively feel that many buyers seek out specifically. It also carries the brand’s British personality, which helps it feel more distinctive than a typical small hatchback.
For 2016, the third-generation Cooper uses a turbo 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that makes 134 horsepower. That setup is aimed at buyers who want an economy version of a premium-feeling car, and the car is described as still being pretty fun to drive. The cabin also has a unique touch in its 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, which is surrounded by a light ring that changes colors with drive modes and adds visual character inside.
There are tradeoffs, though. The back seat is still tight, cargo space is restricted, and the Convertible is especially limited in that regard. The car’s technology can also be frustrating, since Apple CarPlay and navigation were added-cost options and Android Auto was not available at all. Reliability is another consideration, and the 2016 model is singled out as one of the years with more problems, so a careful inspection matters.

I love the mini cooper. Sporty but good pick up on the gas pedal.

I believe the car is of great value. I enjoy the engine start switch vs. the button. It drives smooth and it’s easy to do 80 mph without realizing. The interior design is beautiful , as well as the exterior. The only thing I believe it is missing is the ability to play music on your phone via Bluetooth. It does have Bluetooth capability but only for phone calls. You’ll need a usb or aux cable to play music from your phone. Other than that I love it.

The vehicle was extremely clean and a blast to drive. It had extremely responsive handling with plenty of power to easily climb all the hills I challenged it to which was a needless concern of its 3 cylinder engine. For the most part, the ride was smooth, only “bottoming out” once and I took it on some pretty rural roads. It would be my ideal, economical, sports car. Great for running errands with the top down on summer days.

This lil car is a ROCKET! I am so pleased with what I paid. Doesnt really compare to anything else Ive driven... maybe a Civic? Not sure - are Civics crazy fast? :) Comfortable ride and crazy HP / torque! The car is attractive and its great fun to drive! Still figuring out all the bells and whistles, but no complaints! :)

Is the 2016 MINI Cooper a good car?
Yes — the 4.67/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Reviewers consistently praise its fun driving experience, sporty design, and responsive handling, and many also call out its peppy power and comfortable interior. That makes it a strong fit if you want a small car that feels lively and distinctive rather than purely practical. With 34.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 MINI Cooper reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Reviewers also describe it as peppy and enjoyable in everyday use, which supports the idea that many owners feel good about living with it over time. Even so, this model year is singled out as one with more problems, so a careful pre-purchase inspection matters if you want to reduce long-term ownership risk.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 MINI Cooper?
At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
Start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. Then prioritize a thorough inspection of body panels, alignment, and signs of uneven wear, since condition matters more when you’re shopping a model year with mixed history. You should also pay close attention to how the car drives and whether its features work as expected, especially if you want a trouble-free ownership experience.

What is the 2016 MINI Cooper's resale value?
The current average of $11,391 sits slightly below last year's $11,738.
That kind of softening can make the car a little easier to buy now, but it also means future sellers may need to price carefully to stay competitive. If you keep the car in strong condition and avoid accident history, you’ll be in a better position when it’s time to resell. Demand should remain supported by the model’s strong owner satisfaction and distinctive appeal.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 MINI Cooper or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.95% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $9,859, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $11,391 average.
- It offers the MINI formula in a more affordable package.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2015 is the smarter value play, especially if you’re willing to trade up only when the right condition and equipment show up.
