CarGurus Analysis: 2016 MINI Cooper

Summary
With 563 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,158, 33.9% of 2016 MINI Cooper listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 MINI Cooper 4.67 / 5 stars.
59.5% of 2016 MINI Cooper listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 MINI Cooper stands out because it blends retro style with a genuinely playful driving character. MINI’s own reputation for sharp handling and go-kart-like feel comes through clearly in this generation, and the car’s small size helps make it feel nimble and eager on the road. It also carries the brand’s premium, customizable personality, which is a big part of its appeal for buyers who want something more distinctive than a typical small hatchback.
For 2016, the standard engine is a turbo 1.5-liter three-cylinder that makes 134 horsepower, while the Cooper S is the quicker choice with 189 horsepower. The cabin also gets an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and navigation available, though those features were added-cost options, and Android Auto was not available at all. That mix of charm, performance, and personalization makes the 2016 MINI Cooper appealing, but it is still a small car with a tight back seat and restricted cargo space, and its reliability record is a real consideration for used buyers.

I love the mini cooper. Sporty but good pick up on the gas pedal.

I believe the car is of great value. I enjoy the engine start switch vs. the button. It drives smooth and it’s easy to do 80 mph without realizing. The interior design is beautiful , as well as the exterior. The only thing I believe it is missing is the ability to play music on your phone via Bluetooth. It does have Bluetooth capability but only for phone calls. You’ll need a usb or aux cable to play music from your phone. Other than that I love it.

The vehicle was extremely clean and a blast to drive. It had extremely responsive handling with plenty of power to easily climb all the hills I challenged it to which was a needless concern of its 3 cylinder engine. For the most part, the ride was smooth, only “bottoming out” once and I took it on some pretty rural roads. It would be my ideal, economical, sports car. Great for running errands with the top down on summer days.

This lil car is a ROCKET! I am so pleased with what I paid. Doesnt really compare to anything else Ive driven... maybe a Civic? Not sure - are Civics crazy fast? :) Comfortable ride and crazy HP / torque! The car is attractive and its great fun to drive! Still figuring out all the bells and whistles, but no complaints! :)

How much does the 2016 MINI Cooper cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,183 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,600 |
| Year-Round High | $11,943 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,949 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.41% |
Prices have softened 6.41% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 560 listings available, which gives you a moderate amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2016 MINI Cooper a good car?
Yes — the 2016 MINI Cooper earns a 4.67/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Reviewers consistently praise its fun driving experience, sporty design, and responsive handling, and many also like its peppy power and comfortable interior. If you want a small car that feels playful and distinctive rather than purely practical, this model fits that use case well. With 34.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 MINI Cooper reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Reviewers describe it as fun to live with, and the feedback points to a car that many owners enjoy over time because of its responsive handling and everyday drivability. That said, used buyers should still think carefully about maintenance history and overall condition, since long-term ownership risk can rise if a car has been neglected or driven hard.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 MINI Cooper?
At 58.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with past damage. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially for signs of body repair, uneven panel gaps, or wear that suggests harder use. Focus on overall condition and documentation, because the best used example is likely to be the one with the clearest maintenance and accident history.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 MINI Cooper?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 560 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.41% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,600, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 MINI Cooper's resale value?
The current average of $11,183 sits slightly below last year's $11,949.
That decline suggests the market has become a bit softer, which can work against sellers who need top-dollar pricing. If you plan to resell later, you may want to buy carefully now so you do not start from an inflated price point. Strong condition and a clean history matter more when the market is already trending lower.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 MINI Cooper or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.41% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $9,691, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $11,183 average.
- It adds a 4-door option while keeping the MINI's playful driving feel.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the smarter path, especially if you find one in good condition and can live with its older pricing and feature set.
