CarGurus Analysis: 2016 MINI Cooper

Summary
With 536 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,503, 33.4% of 2016 MINI Coopers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 MINI Cooper 4.67 / 5 stars.
60.3% of 2016 MINI Cooper models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 MINI Cooper stands out because it blends retro style with a genuinely playful driving character. MINI’s third-generation Cooper uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that makes 134 horsepower, while the Cooper S steps up to 189 horsepower. That setup helps the car feel lively rather than merely efficient, and the brand’s short wheelbase and low weight remain part of the appeal. It is also a front-wheel-drive car, and the generation’s cabin includes an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and navigation available as added-cost options.
Practicality is still limited, which is part of the MINI formula. The third-generation Cooper is five to ten inches longer than the second-generation models and offers a four-door variant, but the back seats are still tight in both bodies, cargo space is restricted, and the Convertible is especially compromised. Reliability is another consideration, since early third-gen models have worse reliability records than later ones, and 2016 is one of the years that tends to have more problems. Even so, the 2016 MINI Cooper remains appealing for buyers who want a small premium car with distinctive styling, sharp handling, and a personality that is hard to mistake for anything else.

I love the mini cooper. Sporty but good pick up on the gas pedal.

I believe the car is of great value. I enjoy the engine start switch vs. the button. It drives smooth and it’s easy to do 80 mph without realizing. The interior design is beautiful , as well as the exterior. The only thing I believe it is missing is the ability to play music on your phone via Bluetooth. It does have Bluetooth capability but only for phone calls. You’ll need a usb or aux cable to play music from your phone. Other than that I love it.

The vehicle was extremely clean and a blast to drive. It had extremely responsive handling with plenty of power to easily climb all the hills I challenged it to which was a needless concern of its 3 cylinder engine. For the most part, the ride was smooth, only “bottoming out” once and I took it on some pretty rural roads. It would be my ideal, economical, sports car. Great for running errands with the top down on summer days.

This lil car is a ROCKET! I am so pleased with what I paid. Doesnt really compare to anything else Ive driven... maybe a Civic? Not sure - are Civics crazy fast? :) Comfortable ride and crazy HP / torque! The car is attractive and its great fun to drive! Still figuring out all the bells and whistles, but no complaints! :)

If you find a listing below $10,646.19, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 MINI Cooper a good car?
Yes — the 2016 MINI Cooper earns a 4.67/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Reviewers consistently praise its fun driving experience, sporty design, and responsive handling, and many also like its peppy power and comfortable interior. That makes it a strong fit if you want a small car that feels lively and distinctive rather than purely practical. With 32.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 MINI Cooper reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Reviewers describe it as fun to drive and comfortable for everyday use, and those positive ownership impressions matter when you are thinking about how a car holds up over time. The same feedback also suggests that many owners feel good enough about the car to recommend it after living with it. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that this model year is known for more problems than some alternatives, so condition and maintenance history deserve extra attention.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 MINI Cooper?
At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can catch hidden damage or repair issues. Focus closely on overall condition, since a car with a clean appearance can still have past accident or maintenance concerns. If you are comparing multiple listings, give extra weight to cars with clear records and consistent upkeep.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 MINI Cooper?
This looks like a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 532 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.58% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,646.19, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 MINI Cooper's resale value?
The current average of $11,406 sits slightly below last year's $11,953.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable entry point, but it also means future resale gains may be limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, buying well matters more than usual because your eventual return will depend heavily on how much you pay now. Strong condition and a clean history should help protect value better than a rough example.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 MINI Cooper or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.58% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $9,790, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $11,406 average.
- It offers a larger, more versatile package while keeping MINI's playful character.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, demand, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the more price-sensitive path, especially if you find one in good condition and can live with its tradeoffs.
