Is the 2016 Lexus RX reliable?

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners also describe it as reliable and appreciate its dependable, trouble-free character, along with the comfort and luxury features that make it easy to live with. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by calling it more reliable than many German rivals and emphasizing its traditional luxury focus. The ownership risk for used buyers is mainly tied to mileage, maintenance history, and any transmission concerns noted by some drivers.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Lexus RX?

At 53% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually strong. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and drivetrain feel as polished as the RX’s reputation suggests. If you’re comparing multiple examples, the cleanest maintenance records and the most consistent condition should rise to the top.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The RX 350 AWD test vehicle was moderately optioned, and the cabin presentation was a major part of its appeal. You should pay close attention to whether the features you want are actually present, since some convenience and driver-assist items were optional rather than standard.
• Powertrain: A 3.5-liter V6 with 295 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque comes standard, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive optional. The hybrid RX 450h uses the same basic V6 with two electric motors for a total of 308 horsepower, and the expert notes that the RX is tuned more for smoothness than quick acceleration.
• Safety package: Lexus Safety System + includes forward-collision alert with auto-braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert was also available, and rear-side airbags are standard.
• Infotainment: The RX uses a navigation system with voice input, live traffic and weather, Bluetooth streaming, two USB ports, and telematics for one year. The system also supports a Lexus-specific app setup for extra services, though that setup may feel more cumbersome than you’d like.
• Fuel efficiency: The RX 350 AWD is rated at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, and the hybrid RX 450h is tuned for fuel economy.

Which 2016 Lexus RX trim should I buy?

The 2016 Lexus RX is offered in 2 trim levels: RX 350 AWD, RX 450h F-Sport AWD.

Here's the short version:

• RX 350 AWD: This is the core choice if you want the RX’s comfort-first personality, smooth ride, and strong value without chasing extra performance hardware. It suits you best if you care more about luxury, quietness, and everyday ease than sharper handling.
• RX 450h F-Sport AWD: This is the better pick if you want the hybrid powertrain and the more aggressive F Sport treatment. It adds the sportier presentation and the efficiency-oriented hybrid setup, but the RX still remains focused on comfort rather than true performance.

For safety-minded shoppers, Lexus Safety System + is the trim-level feature set to prioritize, since it adds the key driver-assistance tech.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Lexus RX?

• Deal availability: 39.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,450 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.20% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,781, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Lexus RX's resale value?

The current average of $22,072 sits slightly below last year's $22,340.

That mild decline suggests the RX has softened a bit in the near term, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper short-term gains if you plan to resell soon. Even so, the model’s strong reputation for comfort and value should help it remain appealing to future shoppers. If you maintain it well and keep the history clean, you should be in a better position when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2016 Lexus RX or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 39.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.20% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The redesign brings a comfort-first luxury SUV with strong value and excellent safety.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $17,215, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $22,072 average.
• It’s a quieter, more practical, and dependable luxury crossover with strong value.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $23,790, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $22,072 average.
• It adds broader F Sport availability and standard Safety System + Package inclusion.

The bottom line: If you want the best blend of comfort, safety, and value, the 2016 is the sweet spot. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 can save you money, while the 2017 makes sense if you want the added equipment and are willing to pay more.
