CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Jeep Wrangler
overall

Summary
With 452 currently listed for sale near Kansas City, MO and an average price of $18,417, 22.3% of 2016 Jeep Wranglers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Jeep Wrangler 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.17 / 10.
71.9% of 2016 Wrangler models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler stands out because it blends traits that are hard to find together in one vehicle. It has a convertible top for summer, 4-wheel drive for winter and off-road use year round, and some of the most unique styling and consistently rugged standard equipment available in any new car today. That combination gives it a clear identity: it is built to be fun, capable, and unmistakably Jeep.
At the same time, the Wrangler’s appeal comes with tradeoffs. The test-drive data notes its poor road manners, and owners commonly describe it as noisy and bumpy on the road. Even so, many owners praise the fun driving experience, the comfortable interior, and the simplicity that can help keep repair costs lower. Gas mileage is a frequent complaint, and some owners wished for a rearview camera, but those drawbacks have not stopped the Wrangler from remaining a popular choice.

The car states it has several benefits such as heated seats, rear camera, led lights, and a wench, however, none of these things work on the vehicle. This could be because if after market add ons, but as of no hardly anything works correctly. We will have to put a lot of money into it to get it working, therefore the price was not a good value.

How much does the 2016 Jeep Wrangler cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,659 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,661.11 |
| Year-Round High | $19,274.99 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,277 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.39% |
Prices have softened 8.39% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,786 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $17,661.11, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Jeep Wrangler earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 6.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the fun driving experience, comfortable interior, and impressive power, especially with the manual transmission. They also value the simplicity and lower repair costs, which fit the Wrangler’s rugged, purpose-built character.
For you, that means this model makes the most sense if you want a convertible, 4-wheel-drive SUV with distinctive styling and year-round capability rather than a polished commuter. 30.5% of listings are rated as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels simple, durable, and relatively inexpensive to repair. It also suggests that many buyers appreciate the Wrangler’s trouble-free, dependable personality when used for the kind of driving it was built to handle.
The expert evaluation reinforces that sense of rugged dependability with strong brakes, standard 4-wheel drive, and trail-ready hardware. The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is accepting a vehicle that can be noisy, bumpy, and less refined than most SUVs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Wrangler?
At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body condition, underbody wear, and signs of off-road use. Because this model is often bought for its rugged capability, condition matters as much as mileage. Pay close attention to whether the equipment and trim level match the seller’s description.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport trim comes with manual windows and door locks, air conditioning, 16-inch steel wheels, and cloth seats with a 60/40 split-fold rear bench. Sport S adds power locks and windows, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Sahara adds bright interior accents, automatic headlights, color-keyed fender flares, Sirius satellite radio, and 18-inch polished wheels. Rubicon is the most trail-focused version, with BF Goodrich off-road tires and an electronically disconnecting front sway bar.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic. Standard 4-wheel drive comes with Command-Trac, while the Rubicon gets Rock-Trac with a 4:1 rock crawling ratio.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes multistage airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, and ultra-strong roll bars. It does not offer lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, or a backup camera.
- Infotainment: The base setup is the Radio 130 with a CD player, MP3 capability, and a front auxiliary audio jack. A 6.5-inch touchscreen adds GPS-based navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and front-facing aux audio and USB capabilities.
- Fuel efficiency: The Wrangler Unlimited is estimated at 16 mpg city, 21 highway, and 18 combined with the manual transmission. With the automatic, highway mileage drops to 20 mpg.
Which 2016 Jeep Wrangler trim should I buy?
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Wrangler basics without much extra equipment. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and plan to keep the truck simple.
- Sport S: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like power windows and locks, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.
- Sahara: Choose this if you want a more polished cabin and a few convenience upgrades, including bright interior accents, automatic headlights, Sirius satellite radio, color-keyed fender flares, and 18-inch polished wheels.
- Rubicon: This is the trim to buy if off-road capability is your priority. It adds BF Goodrich off-road tires, an electronically disconnecting front sway bar, and Rock-Trac 4-wheel drive with a 4:1 crawl ratio.
Safety equipment is standard across the lineup, but the Wrangler still lacks advanced driver-assistance features and a backup camera.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Wrangler?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting deep discounts on every listing.
- Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,786 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.39% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,661.11, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler's resale value?
The current average of $17,659 sits slightly below last year's $19,277.
That decline suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy carefully and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can still protect value better than the average listing.
The Wrangler’s strong identity and loyal buyer base help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable trims and clean history. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Jeep Wrangler safe?
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
The Wrangler offers standard multistage airbags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, and ultra-strong roll bars. It also includes strong braking capabilities and trailer sway control, which help with towing stability.
At the same time, it lacks lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, and even a backup camera. That means you should be especially careful if safety tech is a priority for your daily driving.
Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Wrangler or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines a convertible top, standard 4-wheel drive, and rugged equipment in a way that keeps its off-road identity intact.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $16,555, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,659 average.
- It stays true to its rugged identity while adding a few fresh touches.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, character, and year-specific market softness, the 2016 is the better default choice. If your top priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly path, especially if you find a clean example with the equipment you want.
