What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Honda Odyssey?

At 55.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage family hauler. Focus on signs of interior wear, sliding-door operation, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re shopping. If you want the safest and most convenient setup, make sure the equipment matches the listing and not just the trim name.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base LX is the only trim with seating for 7 instead of 8, and it lacks Honda LaneWatch; higher trims add more convenience and safety equipment, with the Touring Elite standing out for its blind-spot information system and upgraded headlights.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 248 hp and a 6-speed automatic transmission, and the Odyssey is front-wheel drive only.
• Safety package: Vehicle stability assist, traction control, antilock brakes, daytime running lights, and a rear-view camera are standard, while forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot information are reserved for select trims.
• Infotainment: Every trim gets an 8-inch high-resolution display, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, streaming audio, Pandora, USB audio, and MP3 capability; higher trims add a 7-inch touchscreen, SiriusXM, HD Radio, navigation, and rear entertainment.
• Fuel efficiency: It returns 19 mpg city/28 highway/22 combined, and real-world testing returned 24 mpg in mixed driving.

Which 2016 Honda Odyssey trim should I buy?

The 2016 Honda Odyssey is offered in 6 trim levels: LX, EX, SE, EX-L, Touring, Touring Elite.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the least expensive way into the Odyssey, and it still gives you the core family-hauler basics, including the 8-inch display, rear-view camera, and Magic Seat. It’s the right pick if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the extra convenience and safety features found higher up.
• EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 8-passenger layout, power sliding doors, push-button start, Honda LaneWatch, and a better infotainment setup without jumping all the way to the pricier luxury-oriented trims.
• SE: This trim is for you if rear-seat entertainment, SiriusXM, the 115-volt outlet, and the HondaVac matter more than broader feature depth. It’s a smart choice if those specific extras are your priority.
• EX-L: This is the trim to target if you want a stronger safety and comfort mix, since it adds forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, heated leather seats, a moonroof, and a power tailgate.
• Touring: Choose this if you want the more premium convenience and entertainment setup, including navigation, rear entertainment, fog lights, and the acoustic windshield.
• Touring Elite: This is the top choice if you want the most equipment, including the blind-spot information system, upgraded headlights, the 650-watt audio system, and the widest entertainment screen.

The safety package is strongest on the higher trims, while the base LX misses Honda LaneWatch and the top trims add the most advanced driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Honda Odyssey?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

• Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,550 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.59% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 55.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,278, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Honda Odyssey's resale value?

The current average of $13,813 sits slightly below last year's $14,477.

That softer pricing suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can make it harder for a future seller to command a premium unless the van is especially clean and well equipped. Even so, the Odyssey’s strong reputation and family-friendly appeal help support demand. Well-kept examples with desirable features should remain easier to move than less complete or higher-wear listings.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Honda Odyssey safe?

The 2016 Honda Odyssey earns a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and a four-star rating in rollover testing.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes multiple airbags, active front head restraints, vehicle stability control, antilock brakes, brake assist, electronic brakeforce distribution, tire pressure monitoring, and a rear-view camera. Honda LaneWatch is standard on all but the base LX, while forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot information are available only on select trims. The main caveat is that it lacks autonomous braking, which kept it from earning the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus rating.

Should I buy a 2016 Honda Odyssey or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.59% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong safety ratings with a family-focused cabin and flexible seating.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,447, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,813 average.
• It emphasizes practicality and family use with strong owner praise for comfort and value.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and family-friendly features, the 2016 is the stronger all-around pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the better value-oriented alternative.

How does the 2016 Honda Odyssey compare to the 2016 Toyota Sienna?

Our experts score the 2016 Honda Odyssey 8.2/10 and the 2016 Toyota Sienna 7.7/10.

The Odyssey is the better choice if you want the stronger overall expert score, a lower average used price, and a more car-like driving feel. The Sienna has the edge in horsepower and slightly better deal availability, but it also costs more on the used market. If you care most about value, safety, and family-friendly versatility, the Odyssey is the more compelling pick.
