How much does the 2016 GMC Yukon XL cost?

Prices have softened 13.13% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 789 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL a good car?

Generally — the 2016 GMC Yukon XL earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 6.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Technology.

Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, comfort, and family-friendly cabin, especially the ability to seat 8 or 9 people with ample cargo room. The review summary also points to smooth ride quality and convenience features that make daily use easier.

That lines up with the Yukon XL’s use case as a full-size SUV for large families or buyers who need serious passenger and cargo space, plus real towing ability. With 32.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL reliable?

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary also points to dependable day-to-day use through its spacious, comfortable, and convenience-focused design, while the expert notes say reliability has been an issue and that the model scored below average in every category except feature quality and design. That combination suggests the Yukon XL can be satisfying to live with, but you should pay close attention to maintenance history and any signs of past repair work.

The expert notes also describe the Yukon XL as having manufacturing oversights, and the ownership risk for used buyers is that those issues can turn into expensive long-term headaches if you skip a careful inspection.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 GMC Yukon XL?

At 55.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible cosmetic wear. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven panel gaps, and any evidence that safety or convenience systems were repaired after a collision.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SLE gives you the core Yukon XL formula with a large 9-person cabin, front and rear parking sensors, auto headlights and wipers, a rear-view camera, remote ignition, keyless entry, tri-zone auto climate control, rear privacy glass, power front seats, cruise control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a 9-speaker Bose stereo, HD and satellite radio, 5 USB ports, an Aux input, and 4G LTE with a Wi-Fi hotspot. The SLT adds more comfort and convenience, including keyless ignition and entry, a hands-free power liftgate, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated power second row, power-folding third row, power-folding mirrors with auto-dim, a heated power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, driver memory, wireless charging, and ambient interior lighting. The Denali brings the most upscale equipment, including a unique chrome grille, 20-inch alloys, xenon headlights, a customizable digital instrument panel, a larger V8 engine, a magneto-rheological suspension, navigation, second-row captain’s chairs, an upgraded 10-speaker Bose Surround Sound stereo, and active noise cancellation. The SLT is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a lot of comfort and safety equipment without jumping all the way to Denali pricing.
• Powertrain: SLE and SLT models use a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque paired with a 6-speed automatic. You can choose rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive with a 2-speed transfer case and low-range gearing, and the 5.3-liter setup is rated at 16 mpg city/23 highway with RWD or 15/22 with 4WD. The Denali uses a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque; it is quicker, but it does not match the 5.3-liter for towing capacity.
• Safety package: The Enhanced Driver Alert package adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and a vibrating seat alert. On SLT trims, it also includes rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise with crash-avoidance braking is also mentioned as an available add-on.
• Infotainment: The Yukon XL uses an 8-inch touchscreen with the upgraded IntelliLink system, Bluetooth, a 9-speaker Bose stereo, HD and satellite radio, 5 USB ports, an Aux input, an SD slot, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The processor upgrade helps reduce input delay, and Apple CarPlay is included for 2016.
• Fuel efficiency: The 5.3-liter V8 is rated at 16 mpg city and 23 highway with rear-wheel drive, or 15 mpg city and 22 highway with 4WD. The Denali’s 6.2-liter V8 is rated at 14 mpg city and 20 highway with 4WD.

Which 2016 GMC Yukon XL trim should I buy?

The 2016 GMC Yukon XL is offered in 3 trim levels: SLE, SLT, Denali.

Here's the short version:

• SLE: This is the entry point, but it still gives you a lot of the Yukon XL’s core value: 9-person seating, parking sensors, a rear-view camera, remote ignition, keyless entry, tri-zone climate control, and the 8-inch touchscreen with Bose audio and Wi-Fi hotspot support. If you want the lowest-cost way into the lineup and care most about space and utility, this is the starting point.
• SLT: This is the best-value trim for most used buyers because it adds a big jump in comfort and convenience, including heated and ventilated front seats, a heated second row, a hands-free power liftgate, wireless charging, and more advanced safety content. It gives you much of the upscale feel without the Denali price jump.
• Denali: Choose this if you want the most premium Yukon XL experience, with the 6.2-liter V8, upgraded suspension, navigation, a more upscale audio system, and the most distinctive exterior and interior presentation. It is the right pick if luxury and power matter more than value.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that the Enhanced Driver Alert package adds key driver-assistance features, and SLT trims get additional blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 GMC Yukon XL?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 789 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.13% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 55.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,306, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL's resale value?

The current average of $17,306 sits slightly below last year's $19,922.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the vehicle in good condition, you can reduce the impact of that depreciation. The Yukon XL’s broad appeal as a large family SUV still helps support demand, especially for well-equipped examples with cleaner histories.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 GMC Yukon XL safe?

The 2016 GMC Yukon XL earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star frontal crash ratings and five-star side-impact ratings.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Enhanced Driver Alert package adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and a vibrating seat alert. On SLT trims, it also adds rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring.

The safety summary also notes that braking performance trails some rivals, and that is worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority.

Should I buy a 2016 GMC Yukon XL or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.13% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 brings useful updates like Apple CarPlay, lane-keep assist, auto high beams, and a hands-free power rear liftgate on SLT trims and above.

The bottom line: If you want the 2016 specifically, it makes sense as a value-conscious buy because prices have eased and the model includes meaningful convenience and safety updates. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare it with nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than chasing the newest badge.
