Is the 2016 Ford Focus reliable?

The expert data also emphasizes economical, reliable transportation for the daily commute, and it notes that the Focus is livable as a daily driver. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the car has been maintained well, especially if you want to avoid the transmission or drivability complaints some owners mention.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Focus?

At 60% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher mileage or visible wear. Focus on how the car drives, how the transmission behaves, and whether the interior and exterior condition match the seller’s description. Because this model is often bought as practical transportation, condition matters a lot when you’re comparing similar listings.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S, SE, and Titanium trims differ in equipment, and the base setup is the most stripped-down. The SE hatchback is the better everyday pick if you want more usefulness without jumping to the highest trim.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder, an available 1.0-liter EcoBoost 3-cylinder turbo, and a performance-oriented ST, while the Electric trim and RS are separate variants. The 1.0-liter setup can deliver strong low-speed acceleration and good efficiency, but it gets noisy on the highway.
• Safety package: The backup camera includes virtual guidelines, and parking sensors are available. The wide-angle side mirrors are a standout feature because they reduce blind spots without relying on more complex tech.
• Infotainment: The screen is small, but Ford’s Sync system adds voice control for the stereo and a Bluetooth-paired smartphone. The display is easy to read, though it can feel limited and cramped in use.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter automatic returns 27 mpg city/40 highway/31 combined, the 1.0-liter automatic returns 28/40/32 combined, and the 1.0-liter manual can reach 42 mpg highway.

Which 2016 Ford Focus trim should I buy?

The 2016 Ford Focus is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, Titanium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Focus, but it is the least equipped and best suited to shoppers who care most about price.
• SE: This is the best-value trim because it balances equipment, drivability, and price. It is also the trim most clearly supported by the available hatchback recommendation.
• Titanium: Choose this if you want the most upscale version of the standard Focus lineup and are willing to pay more for it.

The safety content highlights the backup camera, parking sensors, and wide-angle mirrors, so those features are worth prioritizing if you’re comparing listings.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Focus?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find decent options.

• Deal availability: 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,153 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $8,061, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Ford Focus's resale value?

The current average of $8,494 sits slightly below last year's $8,520.

That small decline suggests the market has been fairly stable, which is helpful if you plan to resell later. A steady price pattern usually means you’re less likely to see sharp value swings in the near term. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, you should be able to preserve value reasonably well for this segment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Ford Focus safe?

The 2016 Ford Focus earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety content emphasizes the backup camera with virtual guidelines, available parking sensors, and especially the large side mirrors with inset wide-angle mirrors that help reduce blind spots. That mirror setup is a practical safety advantage because it improves visibility without adding complexity. The main caveat is that the small screen makes the backup camera less convenient to use than it could be.

Should I buy a 2016 Ford Focus or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The refreshed design and improved refinement make this year feel more polished than the earlier version.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,511, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,494 average.
• It offers a more sophisticated feel than many shoppers expect.

The bottom line: If you want the more polished version of this compact car, the 2016 is the better starting point. If your main goal is saving money and you’re comfortable giving up some of the refresh benefits, the 2015 is the value play.
