Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Ford F-150 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford F-150 stands out as a pickup that leans hard into luxury without abandoning its truck identity. Ford’s F-150 Limited is described as a genuine luxury vehicle in all but name, and it is presented as loaded with extras and tasteful trimmings. That combination gives it a more upscale feel than buyers might expect from a full-size, light-duty pickup.
What makes it especially appealing is the way those upscale touches are paired with a strong overall reputation. The summary calls it arguably the best full-size, light-duty pickup you can buy, which helps explain why it can look like a value despite a high price. For shoppers who want a truck that feels more refined than rugged, the 2016 Ford F-150 offers a distinctive blend of comfort, equipment, and prestige.
At the same time, the high price is part of the story, and it is worth keeping in mind for used buyers. The available owner feedback also points to comfort, power, and a smooth ride as recurring strengths, while noting that storage options can feel limited and that higher-mileage examples may be expensive.

First off, the waffles color (a beautiful, unique shade) really makes this truck stand out. It turns heads everywhere I go. The leather interior gives it a premium feel, and the sunroof adds an open, airy vibe, especially on sunny drives. This truck is packed with features—from the tech to the comfort, it has everything you could want. Whether it’s advanced infotainment, driver assists, or the luxury finishes, it doesn’t miss. The engine is powerful and responsive, making highway merges and towing feel effortless.

Great value for the vehicle. High mileage but that is not an issue like it used to be.

The truck spent the first 5 years in Michigan. There was new undercoating over the entire bottom of vehicle. In the cracks of the leaf springs and other crevices I could see crusty rust. Didn’t even take it for a drive.

Is the 2016 Ford F-150 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to a truck that many drivers find dependable in daily use, with comfort, power, and a smooth ride showing up repeatedly as strengths. It also notes that some owners worry about maintenance issues as the truck ages, which is worth keeping in mind on higher-mileage examples.
Ford’s performance notes reinforce that this truck feels stout and confidence-inspiring, with strong power delivery and braking that resists fade well. The cost-effectiveness discussion also says the F-150 rates better than average for reliability.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is age-related wear on higher-mileage trucks, so service history matters a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford F-150?
At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or a long option list. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven wear, and any evidence that the truck has been used hard. Because this model can be expensive when loaded, condition matters as much as equipment.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base XL is the most stripped-down choice, while higher trims add more upscale materials and equipment. The Limited stands out for its luxury-oriented cabin and exterior detailing.
- Powertrain: The standard twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 makes 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, and the truck is paired with a 6-speed automatic. The EPA says it should return 17 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Ford offers adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, plus blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and a lane-keeping system. Some driver-assistance features are available rather than standard.
- Infotainment: Sync 3 uses a capacitive touch display with swipe capability, improved voice recognition, and Wi-Fi software updates. Navigation is optional, and Ford says the system supports Siri compatibility.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the truck should return 17 mpg combined, and the test loop returned 16.7 mpg.
Which 2016 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford F-150 is offered in 6 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The XL is the most work-focused version, and it lacks the upscale feel and equipment that define the higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: The XLT is the most balanced choice if you want more everyday comfort and features without jumping to luxury pricing.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the standout if you want the most luxurious cabin and the richest presentation.
- Off-road trim: The Raptor is mentioned as returning for the following model year, not as a standard 2016 gas-model trim to shop here.
The safety package includes adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, plus available blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keeping support.

- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.32% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,918.50, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford F-150's resale value?
The current average of $18,999 sits slightly below last year's $20,281.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than just model-year desirability.
Well-kept trucks with desirable features should hold up better than rougher, higher-mileage examples. Strong owner satisfaction also helps support demand when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Ford F-150 safe?
It earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a 4-star rollover resistance rating, and the IIHS calls it a Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford includes 911 Assist through Sync, which can automatically contact emergency responders after an airbag deployment if a paired device is in the vehicle. The truck also offers adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and brake support, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and a lane-keeping system.
One caveat is that the truck is not eligible for Top Safety Pick+ because it lacks automatic emergency braking. The lane-keeping and forward-collision systems can also issue occasional false warnings.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.32% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 adds Sync 3, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, and a luxury-focused Limited trim.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $17,892, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $18,999 average.
- It introduced aluminum body construction and turbocharged power.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $21,760, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,999 average.
- It brings back the Raptor with serious off-road hardware and more power.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of luxury, tech, and value, the 2016 is the smart middle ground. If your priority is lower purchase price, the 2015 is the budget-friendly alternative; if you want the off-road-focused upgrade path, the 2017 is the better fit.
