CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Ford Expedition

Summary
With 938 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,478.00, 31.0% of 2016 Ford Expeditions for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Ford Expedition 4.5 / 5 stars.
64.7% of 2016 Expedition models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Expedition stands out as a full-size SUV that leans hard into family-hauling comfort. It offers a third row of seats, plenty of passenger space, and a smooth ride, helped by its independent rear suspension. It also shares its basic hardware and styling cues with the Ford F-150, which gives it a truck-like foundation without giving up the easygoing character many buyers want in a large SUV.
For 2016, the Expedition’s appeal also comes from its mix of practicality and available technology. It has rear-wheel drive as standard, with four-wheel drive available, and the extended-wheelbase version frees up more passenger and cargo space. The model line is described as keeping pace with modern tech, with available features such as satellite radio, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 360-degree cameras, and hands-free driving capabilities. Higher trims can be especially upscale, with amenities like a Bang & Olufsen sound system, a 15.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, massaging seats, and special leather seating surfaces.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Expedition is noted as loud on the highway and tough to drive in tight spaces, and its max horsepower depends on premium fuel. Even so, for shoppers who want a spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped used full-size SUV, the 2016 Ford Expedition has a lot going for it.

Great truck, very roomy and has all the features we need at a budget friendly price.

The truck is loaded with features. I think the price was fair, but after taking a long drive, I discovered the engine has a miss. Hopefully a tune up will fix the situation. Compares to a tahoe, suburban and yukon.

This car has all our bells and whistles that my previous 2003 Ford Expedition lacked but I’ve had it for 18 years and it was named The Gus Bus.

Reviewed a 2016 Ford EL XLT 4WD on Mar 21, 2025
If dealers would repair them accurately I may like them better. The dealer just kept throwing parts and the car still has the same problem. I loved my 2004 expedition Eddie Bauer better. This seems like it always is coming up with an issue.

With 930 listings available, you have a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $13,057.48, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Ford Expedition a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Ford Expedition earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the smooth ride and spacious interior, and many also call out the quiet operation and favorable fuel efficiency for a large SUV. That makes it a strong fit if you want a comfortable family hauler with plenty of passenger room and a practical, easygoing character. With 30.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Ford Expedition reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also includes reliability concerns, so you should pay close attention to maintenance history and how the vehicle has been used. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is manageable only if you verify condition carefully before committing.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Expedition?
At 64.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report on every candidate and prioritize listings with clean records. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you’re comparing higher-mileage examples or vehicles with incomplete service documentation. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the SUV still feels tight and well maintained on the road.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Expedition?
This is a moderate market, so you can buy now if the right listing appears, but selective shopping still pays off.
- Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 930 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,057.48, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford Expedition's resale value?
The current average of $13,498 sits slightly below last year's $13,604.
That small decline suggests the market has been fairly stable rather than sharply weakening. If you buy well and keep the SUV in strong condition, you should have a reasonable path to preserving value. Clean history and solid maintenance will matter most when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Expedition or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $11,514, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,498 average.
- It adds a meaningful mechanical update with a more fuel-efficient EcoBoost V6.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around balance of current pricing, owner satisfaction, and market stability, the 2016 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the smarter value play, especially if you’re comfortable trading some of the newer-year pricing for a lower entry point.
