Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Edge Sport stands out as Ford’s performance-minded take on its family-oriented crossover, but the test-drive impression is that it still has work to do before it can truly challenge Audi. That makes it distinctive in a very specific way: it is meant to look and feel like a sportier Edge, yet the comparison suggests its ambitions outpace its execution.
Even so, the Edge Sport fits into Ford’s broader push to build a “Sport” sub-brand across its larger vehicles and crossovers. The Edge Sport arrived after the Explorer Sport and before the Fusion Sport, and Ford says all three are designed to suggest performance and deliver it, thanks to standard twin-turbocharged V6 engines. For buyers, that gives the 2016 Edge Sport a clear appeal if they want a crossover with a more aggressive personality than the usual family hauler.
At the same time, owner feedback points to the qualities that make the Edge broadly appealing beyond the Sport badge. Drivers praise its comfortable ride, spacious interior, and smooth handling, along with available features such as AWD and a sound system. Some owners do mention road noise and minor electronic glitches, but those drawbacks appear to be secondary to the Edge’s comfort and feature content.

The Ford Edge I bought was the titanium trim, so its absolutely loaded with features. The biggest surprises for me was that the rear seats are heated as well, and that the leather seats are some of the comfiest non- luxury brand seats Ive sat on. The V6 also offers enough power, abs the transmission is smooth through the gears. I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality and the ride of this vehicle.

Is the 2016 Ford Edge a good car?
Generally — the 4.45/5 user rating and 8.5/10 expert rating point to a model that lands well with shoppers. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Technology.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, spacious interior, smooth handling, and the technology and features packed into this SUV. The overview also points to a family-friendly layout with room for passengers and gear, while the sporty design and handling make it appealing if you want something more engaging than a plain commuter crossover.
The market shows 29.0% of listings as good or great deals, so you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Ford Edge reliable?
Owners rate it 4.45/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a comfortable, smooth-driving SUV that many drivers feel good about keeping over time, and it also highlights a dependable-feeling ownership experience for many shoppers. The expert drive notes reinforce that impression by describing the drivetrain as well isolated from noise, vibration, and harshness, which supports a composed daily-driving experience.
Ford also includes a standard collision-notification system and safety-oriented driver settings that can help with everyday use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that minor electronic issues or wear-related problems can become more noticeable as mileage climbs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Ford Edge?
At 66.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, brake feel, tire wear, and any signs of electronic glitches, since those are the kinds of issues that can matter most in day-to-day ownership.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE is described as front-wheel drive with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and few options, while the SEL and Titanium add more equipment and are available with a 3.5-liter V6. The Sport sits at the top of the lineup with standard all-wheel drive and adaptive steering.
- Powertrain: The Sport uses a twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 with 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic. The performance notes also mention that the engine delivers strong acceleration and that the standard AWD system is not torque-vectoring.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes 911 Assist and MyKey features such as speed and volume warnings, stereo limits, and seat-belt-related settings. Available driver-assistance tech includes forward camera, semi-autonomous parking, forward-collision warning, and lane-keeping assist, but automatic emergency braking is not included.
- Infotainment: Sync 3 brings a capacitive touch display, faster response, improved voice recognition, upgraded graphics, swipe and pinch-to-zoom support, Siri Eyes Free, smartphone projection for Apple and Android devices, and Wi-Fi software updates.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert drive recorded 19.7 mpg over a week, and the official combined estimate is 20 mpg.
Which 2016 Ford Edge trim should I buy?
The 2016 Ford Edge is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, SEL, Titanium, Sport.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SE is the value play, but it comes with fewer options and a simpler equipment list than the higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SEL is the most balanced choice if you want more equipment than the base model without jumping to the top-end pricing.
- Premium/top trim: The Titanium is the best fit if you want the richer feature set and a more upscale feel without going all the way to the Sport.
- Off-road trim: The Sport is the performance-focused choice, but its big wheels, summer tires, and higher running costs make it less ideal for typical daily driving.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that automatic emergency braking is not included, even though other driver-assistance features are available.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Edge?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,657 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,258.07, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford Edge's resale value?
The current average of $11,282 sits slightly below last year's $12,031.
That price movement suggests the market has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help if you buy now and hold the vehicle for a while. A softer current price can also make the model easier to resell later if you buy at the right number today.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.45/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Ford Edge safe?
It earns an Acceptable rating from IIHS and five-star ratings in all NHTSA tests, plus a four-star rollover resistance rating.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes 911 Assist and MyKey, which adds programmable limits and warnings aimed at encouraging safer driving habits. Available driver-assistance features include forward camera, semi-autonomous parking, forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and Brake Support, but automatic emergency braking is not included.
The expert notes also flag the braking system as a weakness, and the IIHS result is a meaningful caveat if safety is a top priority for you.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Edge or consider a different year?

Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.45/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It adds Sync 3 and standard AWD on the Sport, while keeping the lineup broad and family-friendly.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $12,462, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $11,282 average.
- It adds a more polished family-focused package with ample cargo room and storage cubbies.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2016 is the stronger buy because pricing has softened and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly newer model with a more family-oriented presentation, the 2017 is the cleaner alternative.
