Why it stands out
The 2016 FIAT 500X stands out as a credible entry in the hot small crossover SUV segment and a potential game-changer for the brand. Fiat’s challenge with this model is simple but important: get the details right. This car is so much fun to drive. Its great on fuel and all the little bells and whistles (GPS, Bluetooth, parking assist) make it a step above. The suspension is a little stiff, so Ill be looking at helping that, but otherwise, its a great little car and Im super happy with it.

The car I viewed wasnt worth the asking price. Had some major issues. Now if it had been up to standard etc. Then yes they are good cars. The drivers side door handle was missing the windshield was cracked badly, the engine was running very rough, and Vibrated and pulled to the right. Would not pay for what they were asking... $9950.00 Cost more to have everything repaired. But once again these are good cars if you find a good one.

The expert commentary also suggests the 500X could be a long-term question mark, with durability and dependability still something used buyers need to evaluate carefully.
The performance notes describe the engine as strong enough for freeway speeds and mountain grades, which supports the idea that the drivetrain can feel confident in daily use. The cost-effectiveness commentary also notes that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that individual cars may vary more than you’d like, so a clean history and a thorough inspection are especially important.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 FIAT 500X?
At 67.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or visible wear. Focus on signs of prior body damage, interior condition, and whether the engine and transmission feel smooth in real-world driving. Because some owners reported rough engine performance and interior damage, a careful condition check matters as much as the sticker price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Pop trim is the most basic version, while the Lounge and Trekking Plus add a more upscale feel with leather available, and the Trekking models bring more rugged styling cues. The base trim also misses some of the convenience and safety equipment that appears on better-equipped versions, so you should pay close attention to feature gaps if you want a more complete daily driver.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with 180 hp and a 9-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard on some versions, and all-wheel drive is available for added traction with only a small fuel-economy penalty.
- Safety package: Available driver-assistance equipment includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with active lane assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection, rear parking assist sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high-beam headlights. Some of these features are configuration-dependent, so you should verify exactly what the car you’re considering has.
- Infotainment: The available 6.5-inch touchscreen with navigation keeps the system easy to use, and it includes wireless-style convenience features like voice-text reply for Android devices. It does not offer the larger 8.4-inch setup, and Uconnect Access services are not available with this system.
- Fuel efficiency: The front-drive model is rated at 22 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined, while the all-wheel-drive version is rated at 24 mpg combined.
Which 2016 FIAT 500X trim should I buy?
The 2016 FIAT 500X is offered in 5 trim levels: Pop, Easy, Lounge, Trekking, and Trekking Plus.
Here's the short version:
- Pop: This is the entry point, and it already has a contrast-color dashboard insert plus a 2-tone look for the seats and door panels. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the 500X, but you should be ready for fewer features than the better-equipped trims.
- Easy: This trim sits above the base model and is a sensible step up if you want a little more equipment without moving too far up the price ladder.
- Lounge: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more upscale feel, and the test vehicle showed that it can be paired with useful options like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, and rear parking-assist sensors for a relatively modest cost.
- Trekking: Choose this if you want the more rugged styling cues called out in the review and prefer a more distinctive look.
- Trekking Plus: This is the most upscale-looking version in the lineup, with the same more rugged styling direction and the option for leather and richer interior materials.
The safety-package note to keep in mind is that some of the most useful driver-assistance features are configuration-dependent, so you should verify the exact equipment on any car you’re considering.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 FIAT 500X?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile examples.
- Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 174 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.57% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,940.85, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 FIAT 500X's resale value?
The current average of $8,253 sits slightly below last year's $9,027.
That price movement suggests the 500X has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help you as a buyer today but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, the lower entry price can soften the impact of future depreciation. The key is to avoid overpaying for a rough example, because condition will matter a lot when it comes time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 FIAT 500X safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety content highlights available forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with active lane assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection, rear parking assist sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high-beam headlights. It also notes a caveat: 911 Assist emergency calling is unavailable for this model, and the LATCH system was a trouble spot in testing.
Because crash-test results were not available in the provided data, there is no crash-rating lead to add here. For used shoppers, that means you should lean more heavily on the specific equipment fitted to the car you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2016 FIAT 500X or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.57% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary says the 500X is off to a good start and could change Fiat’s course if it proves reliable and strong in crash testing.
The bottom line: The 2016 is the right path if you want a stylish small crossover with a lower current asking price and you’re willing to shop carefully for condition and history. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the softened market and decent deal availability make this a year worth considering, but you should still prioritize a clean, well-maintained example over the cheapest one you can find.
