CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Chevrolet Cruze
overall

Summary
With 98 currently listed for sale and an average price of $7,745, 14.3% of 2016 Chevrolet Cruze listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze 4.1 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
71.4% of 2016 Chevrolet Cruze listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze stands out as a compact car that asks buyers to look beyond the usual choices. The expert test drive data frames it as a car many shoppers might overlook in favor of the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, or Ford Focus, but also suggests the Cruze deserves a closer look. It is presented as part of the second generation, which gives this model year added significance as a fresh take on the nameplate.
What makes the 2016 Cruze appealing is the sense that it can handle real-world driving with ease. The test-drive summary describes a long trip in an earlier Cruze without complaints, using that experience to underscore how capable small cars can be, and then points to the arrival of the second-generation Cruze as a reason to revisit the model. Owner feedback adds that the car is valued for impressive gas mileage, comfort, Bluetooth calling, and a spacious trunk, which helps explain its appeal as an efficient, practical compact sedan. At the same time, some owners mention vibrations while driving and reliability concerns such as overheating, so the Cruze’s strengths are balanced by a few notable drawbacks.

Absolutely love this car! We ended up buying the 2016 Cruze with 33k on it. It is getting an average of 32mpg in town and around 45mpg on the highway!! We have driven A LOT this week and still have a quarter of a tank. The features are great too. Simple enough to use (not a technology overload) but tech enough to be much more convenient. For instance, I have used cars that connect (like this one does) to you phone with Bluetooth but when you actually make a call, it keeps disconnecting OR the other person has a hard time hearing you. My mom, who is hard of hearing, says it is easier and clearer for her to hear me when I use my phone in the car over the car speakers than when I use my high quality blue tooth headset or use the phone normally. I have a late model iPhone so it is impressive that using it with my Cruze car speakers sounds better. The car is also more comfortable in my opinion, than the 2009 Malibu we traded in. Also, lots of trunk space and leg room in the back seat. In addition, it is easy for me to see around me in this car. I am short and sometimes that can be a challenge. At the same time, it is comfortable for my husband, who is tall. We LOVE this car!

This little car has been great so far in the three days I had it. It has a nice pick up in power and the ride is smooth. It takes awhile for the A/C to cool down the car but is overall a nice car to have for both my daughter and myself.

With 27.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.
Is the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze reliable?
Owners rate it 4.1/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights dependable everyday use, strong gas mileage, and a car that many owners feel good about living with over time. The expert drive notes that the Cruze can cover long distances without complaint and describes the powertrain and ride as polished and easy to live with. The cost-effectiveness notes also point to a well-equipped package for the money.
That said, some owners mention overheating and vibrations, so a used example is best approached with a careful mechanical inspection and a close look at maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Chevrolet Cruze?
At 52% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
Start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage or repeated claims. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or incomplete service records. You should also focus on how the car drives, whether the cabin electronics work properly, and whether any vibration, overheating, or other warning signs show up during a test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The L is the bare-bones entry point, while the LS and LT add the core equipment most shoppers will want. The Premier brings the nicest rims and chrome trim, plus the most upscale presentation. If you want the most polished look and the strongest feature set, the Premier is the trim to target.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses the turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder with 153 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed manual is standard on all but the Premier, while the automatic is described as smooth and well matched to the engine.
- Safety package: The Cruze includes 10 airbags, a backup camera, and available blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors on LT and Premier trims. Forward-collision alert, lane-keep assist, and auto high beams are available only on the Premier. Auto-braking and adaptive cruise control are not available.
- Infotainment: The Cruze uses an 8-inch MyLink screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus OnStar-connected features and onboard Wi-Fi. Wireless charging is available with the Enhanced Convenience Package.
- Fuel efficiency: The test car was rated at 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway, and some Cruze models offer up to 42 mpg on the highway.
Which 2016 Chevrolet Cruze trim should I buy?
The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze is offered in 4 trim levels: L, LS, LT, Premier.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the value-first entry point, but it is available only one way, so you give up flexibility and many of the nicer features found higher up the range.
- LS: This is the first trim that starts to make the Cruze feel like a mainstream compact rather than a stripped-down commuter, and it sits in the core of the lineup for shoppers who want a sensible balance of price and equipment.
- LT: This is the best-value trim for many buyers because it sits in the heart of the lineup and can be equipped with the navigation and infotainment setup that makes the Cruze feel more modern.
- Premier: This is the most upscale choice, with the nicest rims and chrome trim, plus access to the top safety options and the most premium presentation.
Safety-package note: forward-collision alert, lane-keep assist, and auto high beams are available only on the Premier, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are available on LT and Premier.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Chevrolet Cruze?
The market looks moderately favorable if you are selective and willing to compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,697 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.74% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,995, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze's resale value?
The current average of $8,229 sits slightly below last year's $8,374.
That softer pricing suggests the Cruze is not in a rising-value phase right now, so a future seller should expect resale to depend more on condition, mileage, and equipment than on broad market momentum. If you buy well and keep the car clean and documented, you can help protect value better than the market trend alone would suggest. The strongest examples will be the ones with desirable features, clean history, and evidence of careful ownership.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.1/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze safe?
The Cruze is one of the few cars sold with rear side thorax airbags mounted in the seatbacks, and it has 10 airbags in total, including knee airbags for the driver and front passenger.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Cruze includes a backup camera as standard, and available driver-assistance features include forward-collision alert, lane-keep assist, auto high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. Forward-collision alert, lane-keep assist, and auto high beams are limited to the Premier, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are available on LT and Premier trims.
Should I buy a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.74% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.1/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The second-generation redesign makes it a fresher take on the Cruze nameplate.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $9,208, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,229 average.
- A sloping rear hatch adds more utility and broadens its appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the lower purchase price and a strong mix of efficiency, comfort, and features, the 2016 is the better starting point. If you can spend more and want the added utility of the 2017’s hatchback body style, that newer model is worth a look. For most price-sensitive shoppers, though, the 2016 offers the stronger value play.
