Is the 2016 BMW X1 a good car?

Yes — the 2016 BMW X1 earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Performance.

The X1 is positioned as a compact luxury SUV that feels polished behind the wheel, and the redesign gives it a more upscale presence than the earlier version. It is especially appealing if you want a small luxury SUV that still drives well and feels distinctive in a crowded segment.

Is the 2016 BMW X1 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The X1’s overall package points to solid day-to-day dependability for a used luxury SUV, especially if you value a refined driving experience and a well-finished cabin. Its expert evaluation also highlights strong performance and a well-sorted chassis, which usually matters when you’re judging how a vehicle will hold up over time.

The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that many examples were heavily optioned, so you should pay close attention to how the specific car was equipped and maintained.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW X1?

At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on condition, equipment operation, and whether the car has the features you want, since many examples were optioned differently.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin is described as classic BMW with soft-touch lower dashboard panels, and the test car’s stitched brown leather trim was optional. The base setup also leaves out several conveniences, so you should check whether the specific car has the equipment you expect.
• Powertrain: The X1 uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive. It is described as sprightly and smooth, with some turbo lag when cold.
• Safety package: The car includes lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert, and auto braking with pedestrian detection. Adaptive cruise control is available, while blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist are not.
• Infotainment: BMW’s navigation system is described as having clear graphics, with single-string voice commands and handwriting recognition. The system also offers a split-screen display option, and the car includes a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo.
• Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy is rated at 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway.

Which 2016 BMW X1 trim should I buy?

The 2016 BMW X1 is offered in 1 trim level: xDrive28i.

Here's the short version:

The xDrive28i is the trim to focus on because it is the only one described here, and it already brings the X1’s core strengths: strong turbocharged performance, standard all-wheel drive, and the polished driving feel that defines this model year. If you want the best-value path, shop carefully for a well-kept example with the features you care about, since many desirable items were optional.

What is the 2016 BMW X1's resale value?

The current average of $11,675 sits slightly below last year's $12,025.

That tells you the market has softened, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also mean future resale gains are limited unless the car is especially clean and well equipped. If you plan to sell later, a well-maintained example with desirable options should be easier to move than one with a rough history or missing equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

The X1 includes lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert, and auto braking with pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control is available. Blind-spot monitoring is not included, and lane-keeping assist is also absent.

Should I buy a 2016 BMW X1 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.91% compared with last year.

How does the 2016 BMW X1 compare to the 2016 Audi Q3?

Our experts score the 2016 BMW X1 7/10 and the 2016 Audi Q3 6/10.

The X1 comes across as the more engaging and better-rounded choice, with stronger expert scores and a more polished driving feel. The Q3 is priced a bit lower on average, but the X1 offers more horsepower, better fuel economy, and a larger pool of listings to shop from. If you want the sharper all-around compact luxury SUV, the X1 has the edge; if you’re focused mainly on price, the Q3 can still be worth a look.
