CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW 6 Series

Summary
With 211 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,378.00, 30.8% of 2016 BMW 6 Series for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW 6 Series 5 / 5 stars.
52.1% of 2016 BMW 6 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW 6 Series stands out as a stylish, performance-focused grand tourer that blends luxury with real driving appeal. In this generation, BMW offered a coupe, convertible, and four-door Gran Coupe, and the lineup also included the M6 and the Alpina B6, giving buyers a wide spread of personalities within one family. The car’s design is one of its defining traits: it is soft and elegant rather than aggressive, but it has aged better than some of BMW’s more controversial shapes. It is also a comfortable car, though the back seat is snug even in the Gran Coupe.
For 2016, BMW gave the 6 Series a tech update with a new 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen running iDrive 6.0, and the car could be equipped with driver-assistance features such as blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control. That mix of features helps explain the car’s appeal as a used luxury coupe or sedan alternative: it feels upscale, modern, and rewarding to drive. The 640i models are described as the most trouble-free of the bunch, while the M6 is the most high-strung, so buyers get a clear tradeoff between easier ownership and maximum performance. Even so, none of these cars are cheap to maintain, which is part of the price of entry for a 6 Series.

This car is undeniably incomparable to anything else out there. It is rock solid and seeps sexiness. One small suggestion would be to have more cup holders in the front of car, and passenger side….but perfection otherwise.

Luxury ride with plenty of power in 6 (640) or 8 (650) cyl model. All the features you’d want/expect and powerful curb appeal. This is a great ride!

If you find a listing below $19,093.73, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 BMW 6 Series a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the 2016 BMW 6 Series backs that up with a stylish, performance-focused grand touring setup. The overview describes it as a luxury car with real driving appeal, a comfortable cabin, and a design that has aged well. You also get a broad range of body styles and personalities, from coupe and convertible to Gran Coupe, plus the M6 and Alpina B6 for buyers who want more performance or exclusivity.
For used shoppers, that makes it a strong fit if you want a premium car that feels upscale and rewarding rather than purely practical. 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 BMW 6 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview points to a clear ownership split: the 640i models are described as the most trouble-free, while the M6 is the most high-strung. It also notes that none of these cars are cheap to maintain, so the 6 Series rewards buyers who stay ahead of upkeep and choose carefully.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is not just age but the cost of keeping a premium performance grand tourer in top shape.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW 6 Series?
At 54% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report on every promising car and prioritize examples with clean records and consistent maintenance. A pre-purchase inspection matters here because condition can vary widely in a luxury performance car, and repair costs can climb quickly if you inherit deferred maintenance. Focus on signs of careful ownership, especially on cars that have been driven hard or modified.

What is the 2016 BMW 6 Series's resale value?
The current average of $19,804 sits slightly below last year's $20,468.
That kind of decline suggests the market has eased, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit near-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the car in excellent condition, because premium cars tend to hold value better when they present cleanly and have documented care. The softer price trend also means you should be realistic about depreciation if you plan to own it only briefly.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW 6 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.24% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of style, performance, and modern tech, the 2016 is the right year to target, especially if you value the updated infotainment and the broad mix of body styles. If you’re more price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2016 remains the cleaner choice when you want a well-rounded grand tourer with strong owner approval and a softer market price.
