CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW 2 Series
overall

Summary
With 304 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,513.00, 31.6% of 2016 BMW 2 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW 2 Series 5 / 5 stars.
53.9% of 2016 BMW 2 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW 2 Series stands out as a compact, entry-level premium sports car that was aimed at drivers who wanted a fun driving experience and small proportions. It was part of BMW’s first-generation 2 Series, which replaced the 1 Series Coupe and 1 Series Convertible, and it kept the brand’s rear-wheel-drive character while offering a six-speed manual transmission on the coupe. That combination helped separate it from rivals and gave it a more enthusiast-focused personality than many cars in its class.
For 2016, the 2 Series also gained some content and packaging upgrades, and the M235i convertible became available with xDrive. This was also the year the M2 Coupe was introduced to the U.S., adding a higher-performance option to the lineup. Standard equipment on the coupe included eight-way manually adjustable front seats, 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, a 10-speaker audio system with a 6.5-inch display, a single USB port, dual-zone climate control, and rain-sensing wipers, while available features included sport front seats, 18-inch wheels, an M Sport steering wheel, adaptive suspension, variable-ratio steering, upgraded brakes, a backup camera, and parking sensors.
Buyers drawn to the 2016 BMW 2 Series were usually looking for a sporty car that still worked well in daily use, and owner feedback reflects that balance. Performance, handling, and comfort are commonly praised, along with the car’s sporty feel. The main tradeoffs are familiar for a small BMW coupe or convertible: limited back seat space, high maintenance costs, and the need for premium fuel.

One of the best driving cars. Balanced, peppy, great on gas and has all the bells and whistles I need. Roof rails to accommodate my bike rack, ski rack, and the AWD is literally incredible in the snow. Very reliable 4 cyl and never any serious mechanical issues between 70-110k miles.

Model M235i XDrive - this was the best car I have ever driven. Its sporty, the handling and ride is so nice and firm (our previous Mercedes E350 coupe felt like driving a slipper). The seats cradle you, and felt so comfortable for someone my size (56 and average size) (the back seats are very small, but usable - slightly hard to climb into if you are older). We had the auto because Im lame and cant drive stick, but it was still so much fun to drive - 0 - 100 warranted a wooooo a lot of the time. Our model had a backup camera and sensors all around. With decent tires, is reasonable in snow if its not too deep (AWD). Pros: power, looks, seat comfort (for me). Cons: takes 91 octane gas, & a lot of it (esp. if you are enjoying the heck out of it). Small back seat. Front seats are low, so if youre old or injured, they arent fun (I hurt my back once and it was terrible getting in and out). Noisy exhaust. BMW maintenance is expensive. Husband traded it in on something completely different, and I miss it so much.

How much does the 2016 BMW 2 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,593 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,793.16 |
| Year-Round High | $17,131.10 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,728 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −0.81% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 313 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $15,793.16, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 BMW 2 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2016 BMW 2 Series earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the performance, handling, and sporty feel, while also noting that it still works well for daily driving. That makes it a strong fit if you want a compact premium car that prioritizes driving enjoyment without giving up everyday usability. With 25.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 BMW 2 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable in the ways that matter to shoppers who plan to keep it for a while: strong performance, comfort, and a sporty driving experience that holds up in daily use. At the same time, the ownership picture includes higher maintenance costs and premium fuel requirements, so long-term ownership risk is more about running costs than basic appeal.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 BMW 2 Series?
At 53.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Put inspection priority on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of inconsistent wear, since those can reveal how the car was treated. It also makes sense to focus on maintenance records and overall condition, especially if you want to avoid surprises on a sporty premium car.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW 2 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 25.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 313 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 53.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,793.16, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 BMW 2 Series's resale value?
The current average of $16,593 sits slightly below last year's $16,728.
That small decline suggests the market has been fairly stable rather than sharply weakening. For you as a future seller, that usually means pricing discipline matters more than waiting for a big rebound. If you keep the car in strong condition and document maintenance well, you should be better positioned to hold buyer interest when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW 2 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 25.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $15,471, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $16,593 average.
- It emphasizes driving feel with a standout Track Handling Package.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2016 if you want the stronger current-market balance of price stability, owner satisfaction, and available inventory. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2015 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one with the right equipment and condition.
