Why it stands out
The 2016 Acura MDX stands out for putting safety, athleticism, and refinement at the center of its appeal. Those are the primary selling points called out for this model, and they help explain why it has long been positioned as a luxury SUV with a polished, upscale character.
For 2016, the MDX also gained a new 9-speed automatic transmission, which is one of the key updates tied to this model year. That change gives the SUV a more modern mechanical setup, though the source also notes that the improvement did not necessarily make the vehicle more appealing overall. Owner feedback reinforces the MDX’s strengths, with praise for its comfortable ride, effective safety features, overall performance, advanced features, and spacious interior. At the same time, some drivers have reported transmission shifting issues, which is worth keeping in mind for shoppers who value smooth operation above all else.

I chose this specific trim (Elite model) for comfort and well… the wide screen entertainment system for my younger kids. For a 8 year old car it drives amazingly. I have driven Hondas, Toyotas Fords but this might be the best I have owned.

Yes a great value and w/ Acura watch this is totally incredible for a smaller suv. Having the Acura 4yr. Warranty w/50K miles. This has the 3.5 Fwd power everywhere and power outlets are all over as well. Leather is beautiful it’s got more buttons it can be overwhelming but it’s greatly appreciated.

How much does the 2016 Acura MDX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,673 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,446.50 |
| Year-Round High | $15,765.67 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,759 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.89% |
Prices have softened 6.89% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,015 listings available, which suggests you should have some room to compare options.
If you find a listing below $14,446.50, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 5/5, and the expert rating is 7.5/10. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, effective safety features, overall performance, advanced features, and spacious interior. That makes it a strong fit if you want a family-friendly luxury SUV with a polished feel and useful everyday versatility.
The market also shows 26.9% good and great deals, which gives you a decent chance to find a competitive listing.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a reliable, dependable, and generally trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers saying they can count on it and appreciate its long-term appeal. The expert notes also describe the MDX as historically very reliable, even while acknowledging that newer technologies have complicated perceptions of quality.
The powertrain is described as robust and refined, and the vehicle’s quality-focused cabin materials reinforce the sense that it should last a good, long time. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that advanced systems and transmission behavior may create more headaches than the core vehicle itself.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Acura MDX?
At 61.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a complex option package. Focus on condition, signs of prior repair quality, and whether the transmission behaves smoothly in real-world driving.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The MDX uses packages rather than traditional trims, and the cabin is described as cleaner and simpler after Acura switched to a dual-display setup. Base versions leave out some of the more desirable convenience and luxury features, so you should compare equipment carefully before you buy.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower, paired with a new 9-speed automatic transmission for 2016. The engine is strong and refined, but the transmission and Idle Stop system are described as less satisfying than the previous setup.
- Safety package: AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and road-departure mitigation. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is tied to the Technology or Advance Package.
- Infotainment: The MDX uses a dual-screen setup, and all models gain Siri Eyes Free compatibility. The Technology Package adds navigation with real-time traffic, a premium sound system with HD Radio, and a solar-sensing climate control system; the Advance Package adds a larger rear entertainment display.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates the SH-AWD model at 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. With the Advance Package and Idle Stop, those figures rise to 19 mpg city and 22 mpg combined.
Which 2016 Acura MDX trim should I buy?
The 2016 Acura MDX is offered in 1 trim level: MDX.
Here's the short version:
The MDX is sold with packages rather than a wide trim ladder, so your decision comes down to how much equipment you want. The Technology Package is the best-value path for many shoppers because it adds navigation, real-time traffic, a premium audio system, and important safety-related tech. The Advance Package is the choice if you want the most comfort and convenience features, including ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, remote engine start, and parking sensors.
Safety-package note: AcuraWatch Plus is available on any version of the MDX, while blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert requires the Technology or Advance Package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Acura MDX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still have room to negotiate.
- Deal availability: 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,015 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.89% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,446.50, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Acura MDX's resale value?
The current average of $14,673 sits slightly below last year's $15,759.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that means resale value may be steadier if you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition.
The MDX’s broad appeal as a family-oriented luxury SUV should help support demand, especially because shoppers continue to value its safety, comfort, and practicality. Still, the current price trend shows that buyers are price-sensitive, so condition and equipment will matter when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX safe?
It earns five-star ratings from the federal government in every single assessment, accompanied by a four-star rollover resistance rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it top ratings across the board, plus an Advanced rating for frontal-impact collision avoidance, and the result is a Top Safety Pick rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
AcuraWatch Plus adds adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and road-departure mitigation. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is included with the Technology or Advance Package, along with rain-sensing wipers.
Should I buy a 2016 Acura MDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.89% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 model year adds a new 9-speed automatic transmission and AcuraWatch Plus availability.
The bottom line: If you want the 2016 MDX’s safety-first, family-friendly luxury formula and you find one with clean history and the right package, it’s a sensible buy. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-equipped example you can find at the lowest clean-history price.
