What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI?

At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and make sure the car’s accident record matches the seller’s description. Because the GTI is a performance hatchback, condition matters as much as mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S trim is the one tied to the iconic plaid interior, while the SE adds automatic headlights and wipers, keyless ignition and entry, a rear-view camera, and an upgraded Fender stereo. The Autobahn adds navigation, a 10-way power driver’s seat, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
• Powertrain: The GTI uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 210 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. A Performance Package adds another 10 hp plus larger brakes and an electronically controlled mechanical differential.
• Safety package: The available Driver Assistance Package adds forward-collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warnings, park assist and pilot, and adaptive cruise control. Some of those features are package-based rather than standard.
• Infotainment: The base system uses a 5.8-inch touchscreen and does not include smartphone integration. The SE adds an upgraded Fender stereo, while the Autobahn adds navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The GTI is rated at 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

Which 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI trim should I buy?

The 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, Autobahn.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds automatic headlights and wipers, keyless ignition and entry, a rear-view camera, and an upgraded Fender stereo without jumping to the top trim.
• Autobahn: Choose this if you want the most comfort and convenience equipment, including navigation, a 10-way power driver’s seat, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

If safety tech matters to you, the Driver Assistance Package adds forward-collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warnings, park assist and pilot, and adaptive cruise control.

Should I buy a 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2015 if:

• 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2015 brings a big power bump, a new chassis, and revised suspension tuning.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $13,010, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $12,415 average.
• It adds a more entertaining driving personality and stronger owner praise for fuel economy and practicality.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2015 is the smarter starting point because pricing is stable and inventory is healthy. If you are willing to pay more for the next model year, the 2016 may appeal if you prioritize a slightly newer take on the same formula.

How does the 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI compare to the 2015 Ford Focus?
