Why it stands out
The 2015 Toyota Prius stands out for combining utility, comfort, and fuel economy in a way few cars can match. It is also described as looking better once you’ve passed it and can see it in the rear-view mirror, which hints at its unconventional styling. Even though this version is starting to get old, it remains a strong choice for everyday transportation, especially for drivers who want to spend less on gas.
Its biggest appeal is straightforward: it delivers the kind of practical, efficient driving experience that makes daily commuting easier to live with. Owners also praise its excellent fuel economy, spacious interior, comfort, and smooth ride, and Toyota’s reliability adds to its appeal. The main tradeoff is that it is not especially exciting to drive, and some owners have been frustrated by the audio system and the bulky center console design.

I have had SUV’s , a high performance BMW, a Lexus Hybrid, but still I find myself 100% satisfied with my 2015 Prius. 2nd one, as I traded it in for my Lexus CT200h. What I really like aside from Toyota reliability, is how smooth and chill my ride is. Unassuming, as I cruise through the streets Los Angeles, never drawing attention, saving on gas, at a point in my life I do not to be flashy and choose calm.

Overall a reliable car. We currently have a 2010 with 213k that has continued to serve us well despite aging. The only nightmare with this car is the bluetooth and audio system. It does not work, it connects for 30 seconds then disconnect or keep saying loading. If this is one of the features you are looking for, do not buy this car, it will drive you insane trying to figure it out. Im surprised that a company like Toyota that makes reliable cars would put out such a sub-par product.

31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.
Is the 2015 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also points to Toyota’s reliability, along with a reputation for being dependable and trouble-free over time. The expert review reinforces that with language about impressive reliability and dependability ratings, and Toyota also includes free scheduled maintenance for the first 2 years or 25,000 miles of ownership.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about day-to-day durability and more about buying a higher-mileage example that has been worn down by years of commuting.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Toyota Prius?
At 51.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or visible wear. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and any signs that the hybrid system or interior electronics have been neglected. Because this model is often bought for efficiency, a clean, well-kept example matters more than cosmetic extras.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The trim ladder runs from Two to Five, and higher trims add more technology and convenience. The lower trims are the ones most likely to leave you without the extra equipment that makes the cabin easier to live with.
- Powertrain: It uses a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder engine with an electric drive motor, a CVT, and front-wheel drive. It can run on electricity alone at low speeds, and the setup is tuned more for efficiency than quick acceleration.
- Safety package: Safety Connect is standard only on the Four and Five, and the Advanced Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and pre-collision warning and braking. Blind-spot warning is not offered.
- Infotainment: Higher trims add navigation, Entune App Suite, and expanded Smart Key functionality. The Five also gets a heads-up display, and the system includes advanced voice recognition and a hard-drive navigation setup.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert review cites 51 mpg city/48 highway/50 combined, and a week of driving returned 41.3 mpg.
Which 2015 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2015 Toyota Prius is offered in 4 trim levels: Two, Three, Four, and Five.
Here's the short version:
- Two: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Prius experience at the lowest cost and can live without the extra convenience and tech features found higher up.
- Three: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds navigation, Entune App Suite, and expanded Smart Key functionality without jumping all the way to the top trims.
- Four: Choose this if you want more comfort and convenience, plus the option for the Deluxe Solar Roof Package with a heads-up display, upgraded audio, and Toyota’s Safety Connect service.
- Five: This is the most feature-rich version, with standard LED headlights and access to the Advanced Technology Package, so it suits you if you want the most equipment and the most advanced driver-assistance content.
Safety Connect is restricted to the Four and Five, and the Advanced Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and pre-collision warning and braking.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Toyota Prius?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop carefully and compare listings.
- Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 700 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 6.21% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 51.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,382, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $12,599 sits slightly above last year's $11,862.
That year-over-year increase suggests the Prius has held enough demand to support pricing, even as it ages. For a future seller, that means a clean, well-maintained example should still attract attention, especially if it has strong service history and a desirable trim. The market is also helped by the model’s efficiency-focused reputation, which keeps it relevant for budget-minded buyers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Toyota Prius safe?
The 2015 Prius earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick commendation from IIHS.
It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota’s Safety Connect system includes automatic collision notification and emergency assistance, but it is restricted to the Four and Five trims. The Advanced Technology Package adds lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and pre-collision warning and braking. A blind-spot warning system is not offered.
Should I buy a 2015 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 51.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 6.21% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It remains a practical, fuel-saving commuter with strong utility, comfort, and efficiency.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $15,153, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $12,599 average.
- It brings a new generation with a few fresh tricks and a more updated hybrid formula.
The bottom line: Choose the 2015 if you want the lower purchase price and a proven, efficient commuter. If you can spend more for a newer-generation Prius, the 2016 is the better path; if value matters most, the 2015 remains the smarter buy.
