Why it stands out
The 2015 Subaru Outback stands out as a crossover that emphasizes capability without giving up everyday practicality. Subaru redesigned it for 2015, and the result is a larger, more refined Outback that still delivers the kind of versatility buyers expect from the nameplate. Its standard all-wheel drive is a major part of its appeal, giving it confidence in a wide range of driving situations.
What makes the 2015 Outback especially appealing is that it pairs that capability with fuel economy that does not feel like a penalty for choosing all-wheel drive. It also offers the utility many shoppers want from a crossover, and owner feedback points to a solid ride, a luxurious feel, impressive safety features, and ample cargo space. A common drawback noted by drivers is the lack of navigation, which may matter to buyers who want a more fully equipped infotainment setup.

My mother recently purchased a brand new Outback in 2023 and from the drives I’ve taken in it, all of the safety features and the body style, center of gravity and comfort led me to look for used Outbacks for my next purchase. I was not disappointed in the 2015 and I will have a hard time wanting to sit in any other car without a 6-cylinder engine. The Limited trim is perfectly comfortable: the same EyeSight features and safety focuses accomplish the same as a brand new year model but with a touch of “retro” flair in the (arguably dated but, I don’t mind) screen, the accent lighting in the cab and less is more approach of the interiors.

| Year-Round Low | $10,621 |
| Year-Round High | $11,454 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,458 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.81% |
Prices have softened 4.81% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,355 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable number of options to compare.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2015 Subaru Outback earns a 4.9/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its solid ride, luxurious feel, impressive safety features, ample cargo space, and fuel efficiency. The Outback’s use-case appeal is clear if you want a crossover that emphasizes capability without giving up everyday practicality, especially with standard all-wheel drive and a roomy, versatile cabin. Good and great deals account for 31.2% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with drivers highlighting its solid ride, fuel efficiency, and overall satisfaction over time. The expert evaluation also describes the Outback as a practical, capable vehicle that can handle a wide range of driving situations, and it notes that Subaru’s historical performance in this generation has been viewed as average at worst by some sources. For used buyers, that means the biggest long-term ownership risk is less about the concept and more about finding a well-kept example with a clean maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Outback?
At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s safety and convenience equipment works as expected. If you want the best ownership experience, pay close attention to how the cabin, electronics, and driver-assistance features have held up.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 2.5i comes with basic 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, but it does include a rear-view camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a touchscreen interface for the climate control and audio systems, and a roof rack with crossbars. The 2.5i Premium adds 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, fog lamps, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The 2.5i Limited adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate, heated rear seats, active fog lights, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection, and lane-change assist technology. The 3.6R Limited adds a 6-cylinder engine and Xenon headlamps. The 2.5i Limited is the best-value trim if you want the strongest mix of comfort and safety equipment.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 175 hp and uses a CVT, with all-wheel drive standard. The 3.6R adds a more powerful 6-cylinder engine for buyers who want stronger acceleration.
- Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses two windshield-mounted cameras to monitor the road ahead, warn you about danger, and brake the car to a full stop if needed. It is an option for Premium and Limited trim levels. The Rear Vehicle Detection System, which includes blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist, is optional on Premium models and standard on Limited models.
- Infotainment: Starlink includes Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, hands-free calling, music streaming, and mobile apps. The available navigation system uses a 7-inch touchscreen, and the interface supports swipe and pinch gestures.
- Fuel efficiency: The Outback is described as not penalizing buyers in terms of fuel economy, and the expert evaluation says the standard engine is paired with decent efficiency for the class. The source also notes an EPA rating of 28 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2015 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2015 Subaru Outback is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the entry point, and it already gives you useful basics like a rear-view camera, Bluetooth, a touchscreen interface for climate and audio, and a roof rack with crossbars. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Outback’s standard all-wheel-drive formula.
- 2.5i Premium: This trim adds the comfort upgrades many shoppers will notice every day, including heated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, fog lamps, and dual-zone automatic climate control. It’s the trim that most clearly balances price and livability.
- 2.5i Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want the most complete package without moving to the 6-cylinder model. You get 18-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate, heated rear seats, active fog lights, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection, and lane-change assist technology.
- 3.6R Limited: Choose this one if you want the stronger 6-cylinder engine and the added Xenon headlamps. It’s the right pick if acceleration matters more to you than value.
EyeSight is optional on Premium and Limited trim levels, and the Rear Vehicle Detection System is standard on Limited models.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Subaru Outback?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.
- Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,355 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.81% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,621, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $10,907 sits slightly below last year's $11,458.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to stay realistic on asking price. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be better positioned to preserve value than someone who overpays today. The Outback’s broad appeal, standard all-wheel drive, and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2015 Subaru Outback earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, and versions equipped with EyeSight technology receive a Top Safety Pick+ rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses two cameras mounted on the windshield to survey the road ahead, warn you about danger, and brake the car to a full stop if necessary. The Rear Vehicle Detection System adds blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist, and it is standard on Limited models. Subaru also builds the vehicle around a ring-shaped reinforcement frame designed to absorb and deflect crash energy away from the cabin.
Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.81% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Redesigned for 2015, it’s bigger, more refined, and still keeps standard all-wheel drive.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,316, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $10,907 average.
- It’s framed as a better fit for active use and outdoor trips.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2015 is the stronger starting point because prices have eased and the model still delivers the core Outback formula. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer-year alternative, the 2016 may appeal more if its added emphasis on active-lifestyle use matters to you.
How does the 2015 Subaru Outback compare to the 2015 Toyota RAV4?
Our experts score the 2015 Subaru Outback 8.2/10 and the 2015 Toyota RAV4 7.3/10.
The Outback gives you a stronger value proposition here, with a lower average used price and a higher expert score. The RAV4 has a slightly stronger deal share and more listings, but the Outback stands out for its standard all-wheel drive, stronger safety reputation, and more versatile, wagon-like practicality. If you want the more affordable and more safety-focused choice, the Outback is the better fit; if you want a more conventional compact SUV with more inventory to browse, the RAV4 is worth a look.
