Is the 2015 Subaru Outback a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.86/5 user-rated model with an 8.17/10 expert score. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Drivers consistently praise the solid ride, luxurious feel, impressive safety features, ample cargo space, and fuel efficiency. That lines up well with the Outback’s everyday practicality and its appeal as a crossover that emphasizes capability without giving up utility.

If you want a versatile all-wheel-drive vehicle that can handle family duty and active use, this model year fits that brief well. 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.

Is the 2015 Subaru Outback reliable?

The expert commentary also describes the model as useful, reliable, safe, and affordable, which reinforces its reputation for being a vehicle you can count on over time.

The cost-effectiveness discussion also notes that Subaru’s recent Outbacks have been viewed as average at worst on reliability by one major source, which is reassuring for used buyers. Even so, you should still plan for a careful inspection, because long-term ownership risk is always lower when you verify maintenance history and condition before buying.

What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Outback?

At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can check for signs of bodywork, uneven wear, or neglected maintenance. Focus on the condition of the drivetrain, safety equipment, and interior electronics, since those are the areas that matter most in a used crossover like this.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2.5i comes with basic 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, but it still includes a rear-view camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a touchscreen interface for climate and audio, and a roof rack with crossbars. The 2.5i Premium adds 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, fog lamps, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The 2.5i Limited adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate, heated rear seats, active fog lights, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection, and lane-change assist. The 3.6R Limited adds a 6-cylinder engine and Xenon headlamps. The best-value trim is often the 2.5i Premium if you want comfort upgrades without moving all the way to the top.

• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 175 hp and uses a CVT with all-wheel drive. The available 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine in the 3.6R Limited is more powerful, but it is also less efficient. The expert notes that the standard engine is acceptable around town but can feel anemic in mid-range response, so test the acceleration carefully if you do a lot of highway merging.

• Safety package: Subaru’s EyeSight suite is available on Premium and Limited trim levels. It uses two windshield-mounted cameras and can warn you about danger, apply braking if needed, and work with advanced cruise control. The Rear Vehicle Detection System is optional on Premium models and standard on Limited models; it includes blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist. If you want the fullest safety setup, the Limited trims are the ones to target.

• Infotainment: The Starlink interface includes Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, hands-free calling, music streaming, and app access. The available navigation system uses a 7-inch touchscreen, and the interface supports swipe and pinch gestures. The system is easy to learn, but some shoppers may miss built-in navigation on lower trims.

• Fuel efficiency: The expert notes 28 mpg in combined driving for the standard engine, while the test result was 23.7 mpg. The 3.6-liter engine is described as less efficient. If fuel economy matters to you, the standard 2.5-liter setup is the better fit.

Which 2015 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2015 Subaru Outback is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5i: This is the entry point, and it already gives you useful everyday equipment like a rear-view camera, Bluetooth, a touchscreen interface for climate and audio, and a roof rack with crossbars. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Outback’s standard all-wheel-drive formula.

• 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the comfort and convenience upgrades most people notice every day, including heated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, fog lamps, alloy wheels, and dual-zone automatic climate control. It also opens the door to EyeSight, which is a major safety upgrade.

• 2.5i Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the most complete safety and convenience package in the 2.5-liter lineup. You get heated rear seats, a power liftgate, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic detection, lane-change assist, and active fog lights, making it the most well-rounded choice for families.

• 3.6R Limited: Choose this if you want the stronger 6-cylinder engine and don’t mind giving up some efficiency. It adds Xenon headlamps and keeps the Limited trim’s equipment, so it’s the pick for buyers who prioritize extra power over fuel economy.

EyeSight is optional on Premium and Limited trim levels, and the Rear Vehicle Detection System is optional on Premium but standard on Limited.

• Inventory: There are 1,398 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.49% compared with last year.

What is the 2015 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $10,739 sits slightly below last year's $11,485.

That decline suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. The current range still shows healthy demand, especially for well-kept examples with strong equipment and clean history. If you buy carefully now, you may be able to preserve more value later by choosing a trim and condition level that appeals to the broadest pool of shoppers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Subaru’s EyeSight suite is the key safety technology to look for, and it includes forward collision warning, automatic braking, and adaptive cruise control. The Rear Vehicle Detection System adds blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist, and it is standard on Limited models. Subaru also builds the Outback around a ring-shaped reinforcement frame designed to absorb and deflect crash energy away from the cabin.

Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2015 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.49% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It was redesigned for 2015, making it bigger, more refined, and more mainstream than before.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $12,337, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $10,739 average.
• It’s built for active use and family adventures, with owners valuing its spaciousness, comfort, and fuel efficiency.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2015 is the stronger starting point because prices have eased and inventory is broad. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2016 is the secondary path for buyers who want to compare against a slightly pricier alternative.
